Buffalo Bulls Men's Basketball Preview: Redshirt freshman forward Ikenna Smart

The football countdown was a grueling, three-month trip through the summer. Basketball rosters are smaller.

UB Athletics

We won't have a basketball countdown post every day thankfully, but there's no better way to preview so many of the new faces on Men's and Women's Basketball this season. Today, with 34 days to Men's tipoff, we're on Ikenna Smart, who redshirted his first year on campus.

The Basics

Number: 34
Year: Redshirt Freshman
Position: Forward/Center
Hometown: Nigeria / Greensboro, NC
Height and Weight: 6-10, 225

New Guy?

Kind of. (Redshirted as true freshman)

Before UB

There's not much on Smart, who's only been playing basketball for a few years, but is hopefully ready to contribute beyond his superior athleticism in Buffalo. He played at New Garden Friends School, an independent Quaker institution, in North Carolina, and registered a double-double for his two year career.

2015-16 Outlook

UB's forward depth was already in question with the graduation of Will Regan and Xavier Ford, and then of course the Bulls also lost Justin Moss and are now left with only Rodell Wigginton and Raheem Johnson from last year. I have high hopes for Nick Perkins (tomorrow), and it's fair to expect regular minutes from JUCO transfer David Kadiri (still 30 days off), but it's also time for Smart to move from 'still learning the game' to someone who can at the very least spell the other forwards.

Any sort of further prediction is tough since we haven't seen Smart in any action whatsoever barring two minutes in an exhibition last season.
