If I had to guess Buffalo seems to have a policy against blowing Ohio out. For the second time this season UB had a double digit lead well into the second half only to see the Bobcats turn the game into a final minute nail biter.
It had everything you expect of a Buffalo / Ohio second half. A huge Buffalo lead, bad shots, sloppy passes, and inexplicable missed free throws inside the last two minutes of the game. This time however Buffalo managed to hang on for a close win over the Bobcats.
The only thing more painful than UB's shot selection in the second half was the color commentary of Ohio's TV crew.
When all is said and done it was not Javon McCrea who won the day for Buffalo, despite two critical free throws inside of 60 seconds. It was probably Jarod Oldham who was hot most of the game.
Normally I would love to point out how bad it is to 48-32 half way into the second and win by just a handful of points but it was UB and Ohio. Any win over the Bobcats is a welcome one.
Buffalo is also getting help from around the MAC. Akron fell to Miami putting UB two games up on the Zips and the Bobcats in the East. Ball State almost elped us by beating Western Michigan (but came up short in OT). Finally as we speak NIU is giving Toledo everything they can handle.
The net result is that UB is now a very solid #3 seed in the MAC meaning a bye right through to the quarter finals. Our win over WMU will serve well as a tie breaker with Akron or Ohio if it comes to that.
Matt will be around later tonight with a much more substantial post game post and I will have updated conference standings and tournament seeding when the Toledo game wraps up.
