#20 UB Football Game

November 3, 2007 - UB 28, Miami 31

The 4-5 (4-1) Bulls traveled to Miami to face the 4-5 (4-0) Redhawks in an important battle in the 2007 MAC East race and also a game that could help UB attain bowl eligibility. The game started with a bang when James Starks broke the second longest run in UB history, a 92-yard touchdown run.

Miami recovered by scoring 17 consecutive points, but UB made it a 3 point game with 34 seconds remaining in the half, with a Drew Willy to Naaman Roosvelt TD pass. On the ensuing kickoff, Adekunle Akingba forced a fumble and UB recovered on the 30. A 14-yard run by Starks on 3rd and 10 put UB in FG range, and A.J. Principe buried his attempt to tie the game at 17 at the half.

Any momentum from scoring 10 points in 30 seconds was lost when Miami scored a TD on their opening drive of the 2nd half and then forced UB to punt. However, special teams struck again, forcing a fumble on the punt and setting UB up at the 27. However in the quick change situation, Miami sniffed out the Naaman Roosevelt reverse, sacked Drew Willy and stuffed a dump to Mario Henry for no gain, forcing a UB field goal.

This would be huge, as both teams traded touchdowns, and after a UB two-point conversion, Miami held a 3 point lead. With 2:27 remaining UB had the ball at the 30, 70 yards from a win and only 40 yards from A.J. Principe's range to tie the game. UB moved to the Miami 45, just 15 yards outside of field goal range, when Jeff Thompson sacked Drew Willy and caused a fumble that was recovered by Miami, ending the game.

Had UB won the game, and all other result held, UB would have won the MAC East in 2007 with a 5-1 division record, they would have been a MAC Champ win away from a bowl game. Unfortunately, Miami won the game and later they won the tiebreaker between UB and BGSU to represent the MAC East in the 2007 MAC Championship game.
