Hometown love from the Niagara Gazette for UB's new punter Kyle DeWeen

""There’s a uniqueness about him. I’ve been able to sense it from the very first day he came out here," Simon said. "His work ethic has been outstanding, his ability to focus on what we are asking him to do. He’s been a competitor. He’s got an internal drive."

Listed at 6-foot, 187 pounds, DeWeen has a strong leg. But it was the quickness with which he got his punts off that most impressed Simon.

"His snap-to-kick time is the fastest of all our guys," Simon said. "He’s actually quicker than even Tyler Grassman, who was very good."

DeWeen got a leg up on the competition in the spring and held on to the job through fall camp, despite the presence of Taylor Sheets, a 6-foot-1, 212-pound freshman from South Carolina who played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and was named to the 2016 USA Football U19 National Select team.

"His numbers have been even more impressive this fall camp," Simon said. "In fact, in the last two weeks, he’s actually gotten stronger. Every once in a while he would get a 4.5 (second) hang, but now he has been getting them more frequently.""
