It’s that time of year when many media outlets increase their viewership by creating preseason polls to feed the needs of millions of insatiable college football fans. As I was surfing the internet through these polls looking for UB’s status I thought I would just copy-and-paste the data here so it can be added-on and referenced – at least for the next few weeks before actual games start and the proverbial rubber hits the road.
The CBS Sports Poll:
As this is one of the polls that ranks all 131 D-1 FBS teams, we know exactly where they’ve placed UB – at #117. Their highest-ranked MAC teams are Toledo and NIU at 69 & 70 respectively. Rankings of UB’s non-conference FBS opponents are: Maryland – #56, Coastal Carolina – #36, and UMass – #131.
The College Football News Poll:
Another poll with all 131 teams ranked, this one places UB at #123. Their highest-ranked MAC team is Toledo at #80. Rankings of UB’s non-conference FBS opponents are: Maryland – #49, Coastal Carolina – #78, and UMass – #130.
Athlon Sports Poll:
A third poll that ranks all 131 teams, although this one points out: "this ranking takes into account where we project teams to finish after the national championship in January." Athlon ranks UB at #121. Their highest-ranked MAC team is Northern Illinois at #76. Rankings of UB’s non-conference FBS opponents are: Maryland – #58, Coastal Carolina – #49, and UMass – #131.
ESPN College Football Power Index:
UB comes in at #94. Their highest-ranked MAC team is Toledo at #70. Rankings of UB’s non-conference FBS opponents are: Maryland – #38, Coastal Carolina – #83, and UMass – #129.
The USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll:
Only ranks the Top 25 and "others getting votes" so UB doesn’t get a number. No MAC team got a vote, and the only one of UB’s non-conference FBS opponents that showed up is Coastal Carolina at #52.
Sporting News’ Annual FBS Coach Rankings:
In an interesting twist, Sporting News ranks the head coaches, not the teams. Their methodology is, "SN looks at a coach's overall record, record at the current school and a three-year record to gauge that ranking. Of course, career accomplishments, program expectations and the old ‘this guy or this guy’ arguments come into play, too." Coach Mo comes in at #119, which is up eleven spots from his #130 ranking last season.
The AP Poll:
As with the Coaches Poll (which coach gave Texas a first place vote?!?!), the AP writers only rank the Top 25 and "others getting votes" so UB doesn’t show up. Which is semi-fine since no MAC team got a vote, as did none of UB’s non-conference FBS opponents. As far as the AP is concerned, UB is on the outside looking in.
