For about thirty minutes it looked like the Bulls were on their way to a convincing win. Everything was going right, until a couple of UB fumbles paved the way for an Army 21-17 Comeback win over the Bulls.
The UB offense opened up fast when on their first drive a 52 yard Tyree Jackson pass to Anthony Johnson put the Bulls into the redzone. In the redzone the Bulls were unable to convert and needed an Adam Mitcheson kick to take the 3-0 lead.
On the following drive the UB defense gave up a 52 yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper. giving Army their first lead of the game.
After the teams traded punts Sophomore Quarterback Tyree Jackson showed what he could do with his legs, turning a keeper into a 75 yard touchdown run.
The next time the Bulls held the ball Antiono Nunn got behind the Army defense and put UB up 17-7.
After forcing Army into a terrible punt, UB took over inside the 35 yard line with time on the clock. UB was on their way to putting Army down three scores before the half. Unfortunately for the Bulls Jackson had trouble with the first down hand off, which saved Army.
The Black Knights came close to bringing it back to one score but Army missed a Field goal, offering UB a reprieve.
In the second half UB once again started hot. Shutting down Army’s opening possession and then driving into the redzone. It was there that Jackson got hit in the backfield and coughed up the ball.
That turnover breathed life into Army’s offense. The Black Knights went on an 8 minute drive, capped off by a Woolfolk 1 yard drive with 14:55 left in the game.
The Bulls, still up three, got the ball back but managed only one first down and gave the ball back to Army, punting with 13:55 left in the contest. Army obliged UB by once again putting up a long sustained touchdown drive that gave them the lead with four minutes left.
The Bulls were close to forcing Army to punt, to get one last chance to win, but Army executed 15 yard run on a punt fake to break Buffalo’s back.
The Bulls are now 0-2, and have shown a lot of life in both games but their inability to convert in the redzone doomed UB to a loss. They have also twice had the ball late in the first half and opted to run out two minutes of clock, rather than try to get points.
