Another big opponent on the road, another lopsided loss for UB Women's Tennis, who fell to Iowa State 6-1 in Minneapolis Saturday. Continued tougher competition this spring should prepare the Bulls for the MAC slate in a few weeks, and UB managed better today than in yesterday's 7-0 loss to Minnesota.
Buffalo would lose the doubles point, but was just a single break from forcing a swing set, as both Laura Holterbosch and Christine Haraldson and Margarita Kotok and Chantal Martinez Blanco played their opponents to two-game margins.
In singles, while Friday saw the Bulls almost exclusively go down in straight sets to the Gophers, half of the matches today went to deciding third sets. Tanja Stojanovska won a nice 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 decision at #1 singles, while Holterbosch and Sanjana Sudhir each forced third sets. The former won her first set before giving up a come-from-behind loss, while the latter nearly completed a comeback of her own with a lopsided 6-1 second set before falling just 6-5 in the third.
This weekend's matches were the final for UB before a spring break trip to Puerto Rico, a homecoming for the freshman Martinez Blanco, where the Bulls will face Navy and NJIT. Buffalo last faced and beat 6-1 NJIT in 2014. I do not believe they have ever faced Navy.
