Football recruiting news has been a bit slow this summer, but UB fans have a new name to learn this evening, as 247 Sports' Steve Wiltfong reports that Ohio quarterback Kyle Vantrease has pledged to the Bulls.
Vantrease is a 6-3, 215-pound pro-style passer who also held offers from the rest of the MAC East, Indiana, Duke, and Cincinnati. 247 rates him as a solid three-star recruit, as does Scout, while Rivals and ESPN have not yet evaluated him.
Ohio recruiting website MSROhio.com spoke highly of Vantrease, who threw for 2100 yards and 15 TDs while adding 12 more scores on the ground as a junior, this past winter:
Football is his sport. Last year, as a junior he threw for over 2100 yards and 15 TD's. Rushed for over 400 yards and 12 TD's. Stow runs the spread offense and Kyle looks comfortable running or passing. Like him as a passer first - runner second, but he does have good escapability.
Really quick release. Just snaps it. Can spin-it. Strong arm. Good base. Good throwing motion and release. Throws on the run to either side. Needs to improve setting his feet. Throws off balance too often.
Last fall, I liked his leadership and poise under pressure. Last night, much the same thing. I have yet to see the "me-me" attitude between the lines. All business in competition.
I have read that he has 7 offers. But, I really do not get caught up in offers. I worry more about being able to produce and "fit."
Although some will disagree, but with a good, productive summer, Kyle should go into the fall, as the top quarterback prospect in the Class of 2017. Regardless, of any Star system, he will be the top QB in his class.
