#69 UB Football Game
September 20, 2014 - UB 36, Norfolk State 7
The FCS games are usually fun tune ups where our best players can build confidence and flex their muscles against inferior competition. In 2014, the second FCS game was more vital. After a too close for comfort win over FCS Duquesne, and a loss at Army, the Norfolk game was not only a must win, UB needed to show up big on offense and defense.
Show up they did. In fact, for about 207 consecutive minutes of gameplay, (the final half against Baylor, the Norfolk game, the Miami game, and about 57 minutes of the Bowling Green game) UB was a MAC Championship worthy team.
Joe Licata opened the game with a quick slant to Devon Hughes. Hughes avoided his defender and sprinted 92-yards for the longest TD pass in UB history. Licata threw for 2 TDs and ran for a third while Tony Daniel threw 2 TDs. Hughes and Ron Willoughby each caught 2 TDs.
The defense suffocated the in over their heads Norfolk State offense, holding them to 116 yards rushing and 99 yards passing most of which came on one blown coverage which led to Norfolk's lone score, a 68 yard TD pass. The 99-yards passing allowed and 200 total yards allowed was the best by UB's defense since allowing 65 and 200 against Miami in 2013. The 3 completions allowed is the best in UB FBS history.
The defense was led by Max Perisse who had a sack, two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble, and Adam Redden who had six tackles, 1.5 for a loss, and a forced fumble.
Fun fact, in 2014, UB allowed 10 or less passes completed four times. They went 1-3 in those games, defeating only Norfolk State (3 completions), while losing to Army (7), EMU (10), and Ohio (8).
