UB Athletics

In their first meeting since a 16-16 tie in the 2009-2010 season, the Buffalo Bulls dominated the Hofstra Pride 32-3. The Bulls earned their 8th dual meet victory of the season behind wins at 9 out of the 10 bouts. The Bulls have won 7 of their last 8 duals.

The match started at 165 pounds and Tyler Rill followed up his upset of Old Dominion’s #15 Seldon Wright with a 8-2 decision of Bobby Fehr. Muhamed McBryde earned a 6-4 decision over Sage Heller, arguably Hofstra’s best wrestler, coming into today’s dual with a 22-10 record. McBryde used his Freestyle background to earn 3 takedowns en route to his victory.

Brett Perry earned a 4-2 decision over Mike Oxley in a rematch from the New York Collegiate Wrestling Championships and Nate Rose remained undefeated in dual meet action improving to 6-0 and 16-5 on the season. Jake Gunning earned his 10th dual meet victory of the season and has now won 10 or more dual matches in back-to-back seasons.

Kyle Akins improved to 13-2 after a dominant 20-7 major decision over Jacob Martin; while 19th ranked Bryan Lantry continued his strong season with a second period pin of Vinny Vespa. Lantry improved to 14-4 on the season. Jason Estevez earned an 11-5 decision at 141 pounds to extend the UB lead to 28-0 before Ryan Burkert broke the shutout by beating Ryan Peters at 149 pounds. Alex Smythe finished out the UB victory with a convincing 13-5 major decision over Jake Kaminsky.

Overall it was a dominant victory for UB from start to finish, the Bulls racked up 29 takedowns to Hofstra’s 2. The Bulls have less than a week to prepare for their next MAC dual when the Eastern Michigan Eagles come to Alumni Arena on February 3rd.
