40 days to kickoff: Joe Schillace

Who is wearing #40 in 2015?

Joe Schillace

Hometown: Auburn, New York

Year: Redshirt-Sophomore

Position: Fullback

High School: Auburn

Freshman (2013): Redshirted

Redshirt Freshman (2014): Played in 2 games late in the season against Ohio and UMass

Outlook: Kendall Patterson is the assumed starter, however Joe is the biggest of the three fullbacks on roster. He played running back in high school and averaged 7.1 yard per carry as a senior, and his HS coach described him as a deceptive threat at wide receiver. I think in the Leipold system, Schillace could be a breakout star this year.

#40 UB Football Game

September 22, 2001 - UB 37, UConn 20

0-2 UB had their 3rd game of the season postponed by the September 11 tragedy. The Bulls had 14 days to reflect on life and football before busing across the State to play the UConn Huskies. When gameday came, UB looked to still be unprepared to play as UConn took a 13-3 lead into the half.

A Ryan Buttles interception in the 3rd quarter turned momentum. UB's offense moved 76 yards in 11 plays capped by a Marquis Dwarte 8-yard TD run. On UB's next drive, they tied the game at 13 with a 32-yard Dallas Pelz field goal.

In the 24 FBS games UB played at that point, the Bulls scored 24 or more points once. Against UConn, UB scored 24 points in the fourth quarter. Marquis Dwarte ran for two more TDs, and Joe Freedy threw a 10-yard TD pass to Maurice Bradford. UB scored 34 consecutive points enroute to a 37-20 win.

The win was the first for Connecticut native Jim Hofher as head coach and UB's first road win in 3 years, after 18 straight road losses and the win broke a five-game losing streak against the Huskies. Dwarte ran 25 times for 150 yards and 3 TDs. Freedy completed 20 of 36 passes for 218 yards and a TD pass and Bradford led all UB receivers with 6 catches, 71 yards and a TD.
