Men Down NIU, take on WMU for the Title

This seasons regular season win by Buffalo mens tennis over NIU seemed lopsided, the final score was 6-1. But in that contestfive of the six singles matches went into a third set during their regular season meeting.

Today NIU pushed the Bulls even harder, but UB was able to triumph in the Mid American Connference quarterfinals. Once again five of the six contests either went to a third set or had a tiebreaker.

Buffalo won two out the the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and then Vidit Vaghela had a dominating, 6-3, 6-1 win at six to put the Bulls up 2-0.

After that things got real close, real fast. Northern Illinois won matches at four and one to tie the match up at 2-2.

Buffalo freshman Nickolas Frisk scored a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win at fifth singles to put Buffalo up 3-2. NIU stuck back by winning the third.

At 3-3 the match was going to be decided by the second singles match.

In that match Villhelm Fridell needed a tiebreaker to take the first point, and he droped the second 6-3. The third set was 4-3 Buffalo, when Fridell broke server to go up 5-3. He then won four straight points on his serve to close out the set and the match.

UB will face Western Michigan tomorrow at 1:00pm. WMU rolled over Ball State in their quarterfinal match and beat UB twice this season 5-2.

If the match is held indoors, it will be played at Miller Tennis Center and if it is outdoors, it will be held at Sweet Home High School.
