Our last spring catch up was the women’s tennis team, so this week lets talk about the men who are heading into the Mid American Conference championship tournament as the #2 seed.
UB ended the season 12-9 overall and 5-2 in conference, both of those losses were to the top seed Western Michigan Broncos. Aside from those losses UB has been pretty dominant in conference, winning MAC games by an average of 5.5 - 1.5.
UB also comes into the tournament hot. The Bulls swept the final MAC player of the week honors. Hao Sheng Koay was named the singles player of the week and seniors Vidit Vaghela and Petr Vodak were named doubles team of the week.
To add to the list of things looking good for UB is that Buffalo, because they won the conference regular season title last year, will host the Championships.
The semifinal matches start tomorrow at 10:00am. Western Michigan will face the #4 seed Ball State. Then, at 2pm, Buffalo will face #3 Northern Illinois.
The two winners will then meet on Saturday for the MAC Championship and the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Even though UB beat NIU during the regular season by a score of 6-1, many of the matches were very close. Five of the six singles matches went into a third set during their regular season meeting.
If you can find time I really recommend you head down to the games. If the weather is bad they will be at the Miller Tennis Center, if it’s nice they will be playing at Sweet Home high school.
Tennis Center is located at 5959 Sheridan Dr., Williamsville, NY 14221, while Sweet Home High School is located at 1901 Sweet Home Rd., Buffalo, NY 14228.
