Buffalo Bulls defeat Ohio Bobcats 27-26 on walk off field goal

For the second time in as many weeks, the Buffalo Bulls came out flat, uninspired, predictable, and sloppy. Also, for the second time in as many weeks, the opposition made the Bulls pay by racking up a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Last week the Bulls mounted a furious comeback which got them the lead, but they were unable to hold it and fell to Kent State. In that loss, UB missed a pair of late field goals which let Kent pull away.

This week, thanks to an offsides penalty, UB’s second of two field goal tries sailed through the uprights as time expired lifted the Bulls to a 27-26 win.

The frustrating part here is that against Ohio, currently playing some of the worst football in the nation, UB looked completely outclassed in the first 15 minutes. They literally didn’t do anything well.

Heck they gave up the longest QB touchdown run in NCAA history

The team was not blocking well, couldn’t tackle, the playcalling was absolutely predictable, and even special teams was playing pretty poorly. Although when compared to the offense and defense the special teams looked “ok”.

Buffalo kind of woke up in the second quarter. Saw a lot more of using the “option” in our “option offense”. Between that and the defense starting to mind their assignments and shut Ohio out.

Still, going into the half down 21-10, with Ohio receiving was not a great place to be.

Then for about the first 18 minutes of the second half we got first quarter UB again.

Ohio marched down the field, got a field goal, and on the next series a botched fake punt attempt ended with a safety that gave Ohio two more.

Now down 16 UB went to work, and they looked good. Both the running game picked up and Kyle Vantrease started hitting receivers.

Long story short... Touchdown (2 points), Touchdown (no points), and then a drive from their own 5 yard line to a game-winning field goal.

Given how UB played in the first quarter this is not a game they should have won. Then again given how they played the rest of the way this game should not have been a Buffalo blowout.

So what did we learn from this game?

Not. A. Darn. Thing.

Buffalo can finish with three wins this year, or with eight, neither would surprise me given how inconsistent this team is.

But, at the very least, the game have been fun to watch on the whole.
