Buffalo Bulls Men’s Basketball Game Preview: Syracuse Orange

It’s finally hear, Syracuse, Buffalo, a battle for New York. This is a game that I for one have wanted for so long; a chance for the Bulls to prove they can win big games. If you’re thinking that UB has no chance because it’s Cuse, keep in mind Ball State beat Notre Dame this year fueled by in state rivalry.

So realistically, what should we expect? For starters, it’s a battle of two very different styles of player. The Orange like to slow the game down and set up their zone. They thrive off of keeping players out of the paint. Buffalo loves to push the tempo. One of the fastest offenses in the country, the Bulls rely on their athleticism to run in transition and tire out the opponent. Whoever controls the tempo, may just win this game.

I think today’s game will be an exciting, high energy game. Like the UB students being out of session, so are the Syracuse students so Otto’s army will not be present (which is why True Blue bought tickets in their section). If the Bulls can play within themselves, I think they have a good chance to pull the upset off. Here’s a few other things to look at.

What to Watch For

Wes Clark

It is 10:32 as I type this and Clark is still not eligible because his grades have not been posted. He can play as soon as they are done and will be a starter if eligible. His ceiling is high and with no Dontay Caruthers the Bulls could use another experienced PG to compliment Davonta Jordan. Here’s to hoping his professors get the biggest assist of the game.

Nick Perkins vs the 2-3 Zone

Everyone and their mom knows about Syracuse’s zone. The famous 2-3 has stopped teams since way before I was born. How will Nick Perkins handle this defense with not as much time one on one in the paint to develop his post moves? Hopefully he plays quick, but in control.

Atmosphere

The Carrier Dome is a tough place to play because of sheer size and number of fans. That being said, I think you’ll see a good amount of blue at the game tonight. The worst case scenario is UB gets over taken by the size and has a slow start they can’t come back from. If they score early, then they will have a chance to win.

Final Thoughts

This is going to be a fun and close game to me. Both teams are very talented in different aspects and I think it will be a battle tonight. Toledo lost by 10 in the dome so don’t think this game is impossible to win. However, a loss does not hurt us at all, this is more of a learning game. While winning is fun, don’t put too much in to the outcome because at this point, MAC play is what matters. Enjoy the game tonight and as always, Go Bulls!
