NBA Summer League Schedule - Golden State Warriors

USA TODAY Sports

When the NBA Summer league tips off in a couple of weeks UB fans will be treated to both Javon McCrea and Mitchell Watt. McCrea was taken by the Mavericks a day after the NBA draft ended while his former teammate, Mitchel Watt was added to the Golden State summer league roster this past week.

This is Watt's second attempt at the NBA Summer league. Last year he tried out with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Propelled by a senior season in which he averaged 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds Watt completed his time at Buffalo with more than a thousand career points and he earned MAC Player of the Year honors. In April 2012, after the Bulls lost in the second round of the CIT tournament, Watt went on to impress NBA scouts at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. There was real Buzz that he might get drafted but it was not to be.

On defense Mitchell has been dubbed "sWatt" by the Buffalo faithful. His blocks per game numbers put him just outside of the top 30 in the nation. This, more than offense, is where Watt shows his intelligence and leadership. Watt is an excellent communicator, a very verbal player, when the opposition holds the ball.

Instead Memphis picked him up for the summer league and after that did not work out he went to Isreal to play for Hapoel Gilboa Galil, a professional basketball club which plays in a 2,500-seat stadium in Gan Ner. Most recently Watt has been playing for Ironi Nes Ziona.

Ironically one of the teams that had was rumored to be interested in Watt back in 2012 was the

The NBA Summer leagues features a mix of rookies and some of the younger bench players to see how well some players work with others. The main benefit for fans, as well as the media, is to get a preview of the top rookies and how they will fit into the NBA and how they transition from college basketball to the NBA.

For the second year, the summer league will be a tournament-style event. Three games will be used to seed the teams and then the tournament, which tips off on July 16 and runs through the Championship Game on July 21, will be used to crown a champion. Each team will play no fewer than five games during Samsung NBA Summer League 2014.

The Warriors went undefeated (7-0) en route to capturing the inaugural Summer League Championship last season. This year they are defending their crown with some recent draft picks like Nemanja Nedovic, Ognjen Kuzmic and Festus Ezeli along with Watt and several other undrafted signees.
