Buffalo Bulls Wrestling Tri-Match Results

Coming off of a disappointing loss to MAC rival Kent State, UB hit the road today for a tri-match with Appalachian State and Clarion.

The match against Appalachian State started at 174 pounds with Muhamed McBryde taking on nationally ranked Nick Kee and after a hard fought battle Kee edged out McBryde with a 3-2 decision to put App State on the board first. Joe Ariola and James Benjamin would both answer at 184 and 197 pounds respectively; Ariola won handily in a 9-3 decision over Taylor Jackson and Benjamin won in dramatic fashion over Randall Diabe. Benjamin scored a takedown and back points in the closing seconds to win the match - we're still waiting on the official score and we'll update it when it becomes available.

Then, Jake Gunning gave up a major decision in the closing seconds to nationally ranked Denzel Dejournette to give App State the 7-6 heading into the lightweights. Kyle Akins and Bryan Lantry responded at 125 and 133 pounds defeating Vito Pasone and Jacob Grigg respectively giving UB the 12-7 lead heading into the final 4 matches. However, Brandon Lapi, Sean Peacock and Tim Schaefer all lost leaving UB in a 16-12 hole heading into the final match of the dual meet. But, Tyler Rill couldn't get the victory and UB fell to the Mountaineers 19-12.

After a strong start, UB wasn't able to close out, losing the final 4 weights; it's a disappointing loss but there's still some positives to take.

***UPDATE***

In their second dual of the day, UB took on the Clarion Golden Eagles. UB started out slow with two close losses at 174 and 184 pounds. Austin Weigel gave up a late takedown and Joe Ariola gave up a reversal at the buzzer to fall 5-4. James Benjamin would win in a thriller at 197; after giving up a couple of takedowns and in the process of being taken down with just under 30 seconds remaining in the match, Benjamin used his momentum to roll through and plant his opponent on his back for the pinfall. Jake Gunning got back on track with a 7-4 decision at 285 pounds to give UB a 9-6 lead heading in the lighter weights.

Kyle Akins and Bryan Lantry capped off banner days with bonus point victories in their respective weight classes. Akins pinned Travis Jones in 4:20 after dominating the entire match and Bryan Lantry scored a major decision victory at 133 pounds after scoring a pair of takedowns in the 3rd stanza to take the 11-3 victory. Nationally ranked Brock Zacherl responded for the Golden Eagles by hanging on against Brandon Lapi at 141 pounds. In a correction from earlier it seems that Sean Peacock was at 149 pounds today and Adrian Ferrarie was at 157 pounds. Peacock took on Brock Zacherl's brother Brodie and lost in a very close 4-3 decision. Ferrarie impressed in his second match of the day jumping out to a 10-2 lead after 1 period of action and that would be all he would need as he held on for a 10-3 decision which sealed the win for UB.

In the final bout of the day Tyler Rill earned a pinfall victory after earning several takedowns as he was looking for a technical fall victory to put the cherry on top of the UB 28-12 victory. It was a very nice bounceback after the close loss at the hands of Appalachian State. I am more encouraged about the App State result after seeing that Cotten, Schaefer and McBryde were all (seemingly) out of the lineup. We'll see when the official results are posted who exactly wrestled in the first dual but nonetheless, a solid effort today from John Stutzman's squad as they move to 6-4.

UB will have 10 days off before heading to the Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern on December 29th and 30th.
