A late season surge from teammate Vinny Mallaro and a bit of a slumped senior year took some of the shine off Mike Kaelin's draft prospects, but when the day ends today he'll find himself under the auspices of a Major League team all the same after being drafted in the 15th round, 456th overall by the Los Angeles Angels.
Kaelin struggled this year to replicated his strong junior season, but still reigned as UB's best strikeout pitcher, striking out 44 in only 35 innings and against only 6 walks. In 2015, Kaelin had been Buffalo's top pitcher in most categories, holding down a .177 batting average against while striking out 58 in 43 innings.
In between his final two collegiate seasons, Mike impressed in summer ball with the Madison Mallards, appearing in 22 games, racking up a team-high 8 saves, and striking out 50. He was named to the Northwoods League All-Star team at the conclusion of the summer.
Congrats to Mike, who will hopefully learn his assignment shortly. This is the fifth consecutive season in which UB has seen a player drafted.
