Women's Basketball: Buffalo to face Ball State in MAC Quarterfinals

The Cardinals defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies Wednesday afternoon and will move on to face Buffalo at noon on Thursday, March 13th.

Locking up the four seed in the MAC tournament afforded the UB Women's Basketball Team some time to rest between the regular season and their first matchup in the conference tournament.

Since the final buzzer of their victory over Kent State, the women have been waiting for the last team standing to emerge from the group of Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ball State, and Kent State. With Ball State's 61-47 victory over Northern Illinois this afternoon, it will be the Eagles moving on to face the Bulls tomorrow.

UB won a tight road game over the Cardinals earlier this season, when Kristen Sharkey's 36 points and clutch free throw shooting in the final minutes helped the Bulls secure a 73-69 win at the final buzzer. Ball State would go just 3-5 in the 8 games following the loss, but currently sit on a five-game win streak and actually had an outside shot at the #4 seed coming into the season's final week.

The Cardinals are led by Nathalie Fontaine, who earlier this week joined UB's Mackenzie Loesing on the All-MAC Second Team, and also features an All-MAC Honorable Mention player in Brandy Woody.

Ball State is hot right now, but will be playing their third game in four days and cannot match the season-long resume of the Bulls, who improved dramatically as conference play went on, showing in the final weeks that they could hang with Bowling Green and Akron.
