Last week the Kent State Golden Flashes Swept the Miami RedHawks to claim what many believe is their rightful sport atop the MAC East. The only team with an immediate shot of catching them is the Buffalo Bulls. This weekend Buffalo hosts Kent in a season defining series, perhaps for both teams.
Kent, a participant in last years College World Series, started the season off playing far below expectations but have recently found a formula to start winning. The Golden Flashes head into the weekend on a five game winning streak. Powered by Derek Toadvine and Alex Miklo Kent has won their past three games by over 10 runs.
Buffalo is reeling from a sweep at Big 4 rival Canisius where the pitchers showed up but the bats were relatively silent. The team which had a respectable Batting average earlier this season has slipped into the bottom half of the NCAA and no Buffalo Batters are in the top 250 and any of the major categories (Average, Hits, Runs).
If UB wants to keep up with Kent they will need Tyler Mautner, Alex Baldock, and Jason Kanzler to find their footing and get back to hitting the ball like they were a couple of weeks ago when UB opened conference play with the MAC's best record.
The pitchers this weekend will probably be Michael Burke, Anthony Magovney, and Mike McGee. For Kent you may see Casey Wilson, Tyler Skulina, and Taylor Williams.
On top of the motivation of taking first place in the East there is the added bonus that UB can aavenge their ejection from last years MAC championships by Kent.
