At the halfway point of tonight's do or die contest against Ball State UB found themselves on the wrong end of a 36-30 score. The Bulls had no answer for Ball States senior guard Jauwan Scaife who score 17 first half points on a remarkable 5-of-7 shooting from deep. UB was not helped by a paltry 28% shooting during the frame which was only accented by Ball States dominance of the glass.
The only thing that kept UB in the game through 20 minutes was solid free throw shooting. Will Regan and Javon McCrea forced Ball State to send UB to the line for 11 and they hit 10 of them. McCrea scored 12 points and added seven rebounds in the first half, but had to take 11 shots to get there.
During the second half however Buffalo came to life buoyed by a career night from Regan. Regan who had 11 first half points dropped 25 in the second. The 36 points stands as most by any UB player during a MAC tournament
UB Quickly erased the six point half time deficit with a 7-0 run that was capped off by a layup and a foul from McCrea. The Cards would tie it by hitting the back end of a pair of free throws but that was the end of the competitive phase of the game.
From a 39-39 game, Buffalo exploded for a 35-15 run which culminated in a 20 point lead with just over two minutes remaining. Regan's 25 second point half mathed the production of the entire Ball State team. In the second Regan was 4-4 from three points, 9-1 in field goal shooting and 3-3 at the line.
Together McCrea and Regan combined for 54 points, 5 assists, and 16 rebounds. Eleven of those rebounds gave McCrea yet another double-double.
While Regan and McCrea were dominating the second half Ball State's defense was completely shut down by UB. The Cardinals were just 6-24 from the field,
Three Point Shot -
Point 1 - The New Reganomics
Reganomics (With an A) was an economic policy of the 1980's. The idea was that even if the rich got richer all boats would rise. The policy yielded mixed results that are still the subject of political debate to this day.
Reganomics (With an E) Is the new philosophy that when Will Regan gets rich off of 35+ points the entire UB boat will rise! There is no debate that this works, Will Regans wealth of scoring tonight lifted the entire Bull Nation.
Point 2 - Honoring the Guard!
The guards did not do a lot on the scoreboard but they found a way to be critical tonight. Tony Watson and Jarryn Skeete shook off a cold night shooting and instead focued on making sure the guys with the hot hand got the ball as much as possible. They two combined for 12 assists while giving up just four turnovers.
Point 3 - Holding the Line
19-22 from the line.... Let that sink in...
Not only where those free throws vital to keeping UB in the game when they were unable to convert on field goals in the first half but it also made Ball State pay for any attempt to stop UB from playing a hard inside game during the second half.
