99 for 99 - #24 - The Birth of UB Football

99 for 99 takes a look at the 99 biggest moments in UB Football history during this season, the 99th season of UB Football. These moments are not in any order, however the top 10 moments have been saved for last.

1894 - Buffalo 18, Lancaster 16 - UB Football Is Created.

UB was only 48 years old when a group of medical students stumbled upon a new game. The new Buffalo football team earned their first win against Lancaster. A touchdown was worth 4 points, with a "Try Goal" worth 2.

Tim* Explains:

Missing two "try goals" nearly cost UB the game as it was four points left on the field. But to be fair the try goals were much more difficult than the extra points of today.

A player from the scoring team brings the ball across the line on to the field of play holding it in his arms. The "try at goal" can be attempted from any distance the kicker desires. The defenders must stay behind their goal line until the ball is placed on the ground or until the ball is kicked (if a drop-kick is attempted). Once that occurs the defenders can charger the place kick.

Buffalo scored 4 touchdowns but only 1 try at goal for 18 points. Lancaster scored 2 touchdowns and converted each time and the score stood at 18-12 Buffalo. Lancaster scored a touchdown, but finally missed a try at goal which gave buffalo the 18-16 win.
