Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball dismantles Western Michigan’s offense, wins 62-47 behind Smith’s 27

Going on a road trip after a tough loss to Ball State, Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball came ready to play against the Western Michigan Broncos. The Bulls brought together one of their better defensive performances since conference play started to lock in a win over the Broncos 62-47. JoAnna Smith dominated yet again, but the Bulls also had some key reserves play big minutes.

UB looked like they needed to get settled in for the first quarter. WMU’s Marley Hill and Breanna Mobley brought in seven and four points respectively to help get an edge over the Bulls. Luckily, Theresa Onwuka and JoAnna Smith did just enough to keep up with the capable offense Western Michigan was bringing to the table.

UB flexed their muscles on defense in the second quarter and went off to the races by feeding Smith the ball. She’d ultimately sink three consecutive shots from beyond the arc to give Buffalo a 24-17 advantage. UB also saw big minutes from Brittany Morrison as she finished the half with 4 points and 7 rebounds. Western Michigan hit just three shots in the entire quarter as the Bulls went into the half with a 32-25 lead.

With hopes to extend a seven point lead, the biggest challenge of the afternoon for Buffalo came in at the start of the third quarter. After a Cassie Oursler layup eleven seconds in, the Bulls could not find any shots to fall down for the life of them. Nearly six minutes later, the drought ended with a layup from Theresa Onwuka.

The rest of this game soon became the Mariah Suchan and Katherine Ups show. Suchan brought in back-to-back layups to put the Bulls back into comfortable lead while Ups’ swarming defense kept the Broncos in check. It’s really hard to say that Bulls would’ve won without these two as UB lead 46-34 heading into the final ten minutes.

JoAnna Smith continued to lead her dominant effort through the final quarter. She’d hit four more shots to seal a big win for UB to get back on track in MAC play—moving to 5-4 in the MAC.

Smith finished the day with 27 points. This isn’t even the dominant JoAnna Smith we saw last year, it’s something entirely new because she’s also shooting the ball well as of late. Today, she had 11-20 shooting and in her last eight games she’s averaged almost 23 points per game.

Suchan, Onwuka, and Reid round out the excellence this game had to offer. Suchan brought in eight points while Onwuka had 11. Reid deserves recognition for another strong game dishing the ball with eight assists. At this rate, she is definitely going to break Ashley Zuber’s single season record.

Buffalo now stays on the road for a game on Wednesday versus Toledo. The Bulls have a chance to redeem themselves after a loss to the Rockets earlier this year. That game will air on ESPN3 at 7:00PM.
