Buffalo Bulls Women's Basketball Recap: Ohio has fallen again as the women take home a huge upset win. Final Score: 70-58

UB Athletics

After an exciting win over Bowling Green on Wednesday, the Buffalo Bulls women's basketball team had a much tougher challenge ahead of them. The Bulls had to take on the MAC leading Ohio Bobcats again after upsetting them once already this season. They took the challenge and the women played without any fear. Ohio has fallen once again 70-58.

The beginning of the first quarter felt a lot like the last time the Bulls faced Ohio. UB was mostly controlling the pace and hanging tough with the Bobcats. The first ten points were scored by the duo of Joanna Smith and Stephanie Reid. At the under five minute mark the Bulls held a 10-6 lead over Ohio as Kiyanna Black was struggling to get a bucket to fall. The Bulls kept fighting through a turnover laden first quarter as the Smith and Reid show continued. UB would take a promising 18-12 advantage after 10 minutes.

The second quarter showed that it was going to continue to be a turnover fest. Buffalo had 14 turnovers to Ohio's 10 at the under five minute mark in this quarter. The offense started to stall out a bit as the Bobcats continued to claw back into it. With under two minutes left, Ohio had a lead once again. Just when the offense couldn't get any slack, it only got worse. Late in the going the UB fouls stacked up and sent Ohio to the bonus as it seemed impossible to get any shots to fall. If Buffalo wanted this win, they would need to get the offense back and stop turning the ball over. The Bulls trailed 33-26 after twenty minutes.

The third quarter started with the uptempo play that Ohio desires to succeed. UB kept up with the Bobcats early thanks to Joanna Smith draining two threes and a Cassie Oursler two-point jump shot. After a long stoppage due to a potential technical, the UB offense continued to roll. Buffalo pulled the game within two with four minutes left in the game thanks to a Katherine Ups three ball followed by another for Smith. The Bulls kept fighting and tied up the game to a 48-48 score heading into the fourth quarter.

Neither team was giving up any ground early on in the fourth quarter. The turnover fest resumed as Buffalo caught a huge break. Kiyanna Black picked up her fifth foul and Ohio would need to win without their leading scorer. The game went back and forth from there as each team held a one point lead multiple times. After trading the lead, a late spark was created thanks to a Katherine Ups layup. The Bulls would take a five point advantage and from there Ohio could get within that margin. A free throw battle ensued but Buffalo took control. Ohio has fallen again. It was their first home loss of the season and UB became the only team to beat the Bobcats twice this season.

The super duo of Joanna Smith and Stephanie Reid each tallied up 21 in the huge upset. Reid flirted with a triple-double late in the game with her 7 rebounds and 8 assists in what is most definitely the best game of her UB career. A very impressive third option opened up in this one thanks to Katherine Ups. She would take home 12 points.

The Bulls stay on the road and play this Wednesday in another crucial matchup versus Akron. Tip-off is set for 8:00 PM and the game will air on the American Sports Network and ESPN3. A lot more will be said on this game in the usual takeaways post.
