Russell Cicerone selected 76th overall by the Portland Timbers in 2017 MLS SuperDraft

MSOC Cicerone

Move over Bobby Shuttleworth. We may soon have two UB Bulls in Major League Soccer, after 2015 MAC Player of the Year Russell Cicerone was drafted by the Portland Timber in round four of today’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

Cicerone leaves Buffalo with a long list of accolades to his name. Russell’s junior year saw him win MAC Player of the Year honors and he was snubbed from winning it again this past season. Cicerone also had 14 goals, 9 assists, and 37 points in his senior season. He’s now a mainstay in the UB record books with a UB record 22 assists, second best 42 goals, and second best 106 points.

Cicerone also had an incredible performance this past summer, leading the Michigan Bucks to a PDL Championship. In the championship game he netted two goals.

As for his pro aspirations, Portland finished 12-14-8 overall and didn’t qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. But, most notably, the Timbers won the 2015 MLS Cup. The Timbers are lead by Fanendo Adi and Diego Valeri, who had 16 and 14 goals respectively last season. The club also picked up highly sought after Jeremy Ebobisse in the first round.

Go over to our sister site Stump Town Footy to read up more on the Timbers and here is their schedule for the upcoming season.

We’ll have more in the next few days, but for now, a hearty ‘Congrats!’ to Russ.
