Women’s Soccer season ends with 1-0 loss at CMU

WSOC Cutrona UBCRED

A week ago, UB Women’s Soccer held Central Michigan and their conference-leading scorer Lexi Pelafas in check, only ceded a last-minute goal to settle for a draw rather than come away with three points from the conference front-runner.

Today’s MAC quarterfinal in Mount Pleasant went somewhat differently, as Pelafas converted less than three minutes in for her 16th of the season and an early CMU lead that held to see the home team through the conference semifinals.

The Chips nearly doubled their lead minutes after Pelafas’ marker when Eliza Van de Kerkhove, who scored the late equalizer last Sunday, put one off the crossbar, but UB held steady, enjoying more and more momentum into the late second half.

For a long stretch the Bulls doubled up the Chips in shots, but couldn’t get anything through and on frame, as Kristen Knutson finished with four saves, only one more than Laura Dougall, despite the possession imbalance.

Carissima Cutrona led UB with four shots, but Moira Petrie had two on net, included one in the 89th minute that led to a last-gasp corner, UB’s third of the second half.

The loss ends the season for the Bulls, who finish 7-8-5. We’ll have a season wrap-up sometime next week.
