Buffalo baseball In a tight post season race

The Bulls walked into the season picked to finish last in their division and second last in the Mid American Conference. How they handle their next two series' will either prove that prognostication to be true or it will lead to a UB post season birth after missing out in 2015.

The top eight teams make the post season and currently UB is in a four way tie for that last spot. When tie breakers are factored in the Bulls are 10th, and in last place in the MAC East.

# Team W L % TB1 TB2 H2H1 H2H2 Remaining
1 Kent State 14 4 0.778

6 Central Michigan 6 9 0.400 5-7 MAC W Kent 1-2 BSU 1-2
7 Western Michigan 6 9 0.400 5-7 MAC W Kent 1-2 BSU 0-3
8 Bowling Green 6 12 0.333 4-2 2-1 vs Ohio 2-1 vs Toledo Kent,Buffalo
9 Ohio 5 10 0.333 3-3 3-3 2-1 vs Buff 1-2 vs BGSU Mia, CMU, WMU
10 Buffalo 6 12 0.333 3-3 3-3 1-2 vs Ohio 2-1 vs Toledo Kent,BGSU
11 Toledo 5 10 0.333 2-4 1-2 1-2 vs Buff 1-2 vs BGSU NIU, BSU, EMU

In short the Bulls are right where people predicted they would be. Last in the MAC East and second to last in the conference.

Working against UB is they 2-1 series loss to Ohio. That UB in a hard place regrading tie breakers. The only way the Bulls can win if locked up in a group of teams which contains Ohio is if Buffalo wins their final series of the season against Bowling Green and that Falcons are among that group.

The other UB series remaining is against MAC leading Kent State. It is absolutely imperative that the Bulls take at least one game of that series. If they are swept then Bowling Green, Ohio, or even Toledo may get too far ahead for UB to catch.

Ohio has, perhaps, the easiest road to the final post season spot. They have three against Miami which is difficult but then games against Central and Western Michigan give them six games against beatable teams. Meanwhile Buffalo and Bowling Green both drawing Kent and then beating up on each other.

The Kent series is this weekend and then in two weeks UB hosts Bowling Green.
