As we hit the final afternoon session of this weekend's Sykes & Sabock Invitational at Penn State, I started to think that maybe for the first time in three weekends, we wouldn't see a school record.
I was wrong, and apologize for my lack of faith. Junior Mike Morgan got the weekend off from any pentathlon competition and used his fresh legs to put down a 5.21m pole vault, breaking Craig Howard's one-year-old record by six centimeters. It's the fourth school mark to fall in this indoor season.
Both teams finished fifth in the team competition, down from last year's second- (women) and third-place (men) finishes. Despite that, UB scored points in a variety of events, which in my mind says good things about the teams' outlooks.
A brief rundown:
Sprints
60m dash: Darien Johnson, 4th (6.87); Camaria Long, 3rd (7.64)
60m hurdles: Mike Morgan, 6th (8.12), Jake Wray 7th (8.15); Kailyn Arcury, 5th (8.66), Christine Lyttle, 7th (8.93)
200m dash: Jalen Law, 7th (21.97); Camaria Long, 6th (24.62)
400m dash: Josh Gali, 7th (48.84)
Mid Distance
600m run: Uwa Omorogbe, 8th (1:35.50)
800m run: Tyler Scheving, 5th (1:50.86), Tom Meehan, 7th (1:52.48)
Distance
Mile run: Brian Crimmins, 6th (4:09.12); Melinda Wheeler, 3rd (4:52.41)
Relays
Distance Medley: Men, 4th (10:12.96); Women, 4th (11:43.21)
4x400: Men, 3rd (3:14.710; Women, 7th (3:52.08)
Jumps & Vaults
Pole Vault: Mike Morgan, 3rd (5.21m); Kelly Truppo, 2nd (3.91m)
Long Jump: Tyra Forbes, 3rd (5.72m), Kelly Truppo, 7th, (5.49m)
High Jump: Chris Reape, 2nd (2.01m);
Throws
Shot Put: Devon Patterson, 4th (17.40m), Ryan Cribbin, 6th (16.52m); McKenzie Kuehlewind, 7th (13.65m)
We still haven't seen much or any competition this year from Ryan Billian and Jon Jones. I'm not sure what's up with that, but too all of this add an All-American in the long jump and shot put, too.
UB next weekend heads back to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, OH, for an invitational there. Only three weeks to the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Go Bulls!
