It feels too early to start building a narrative around the softball team, but Friday's results already feel like a touch of "same old, same old." UB fell 5-0 to Sam Houston State in the mid-afternoon and 11-0 to UT-Arlington in a mercy-rule shortened game in the evening.
Thus far, the overwhelming stories of the team have been:
- too many errors
- susceptibility to a big inning on defense
- leaving many runners on base
On the day, the Bulls committed seven errors total, leading to five unearned runs. Worse yet, nearly all the runs scored against them came in single-inning flurries. Sam Houston scored two with two outs and later three more on back to back homers. Arlington put home a seven-spot in the third before later tacking on three more in the fifth to close out the game.
Frustratingly, against Arlington it looked like UB was in decent shape early. Five of the first seven Bulls to come to the plate reached base, but from all that Buffalo only managed one run in the first two innings. They would again load the bases in the third and only earn a single run out of it. Against Sam Houston State, UB only had six baserunners, and never two on at the same time.
Alexis Curtiss continues to drive the Buffalo offense, inasmuch as it exists, with a combined four hits in six at-bats and a single run yesterday. None of UB's pitchers have managed to distinguish themselves from the circle, and I can't really make an argument for any, though yesterday Bobbi Langlois was the most victimized by errors and the resulting unearned runs.
UB gets a rematch with Sam Houston State this afternoon at 1:30 and will also take on Incarnate Word (theoretically) at 3:30. I wouldn't be surprised to see those times shifted back though.
Go Bulls
