Drew Willy Traded from Saskatchewan to Winnipeg

Jeff Gross

Drew Willy who was a backup quarterback on this years Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders has been traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for wide receiver Jade Etienne.

Willy who set numberous passing records as he led the Buffalo Bulls to their first championship season of hte modern era spent time in the NFL and UFL before heading up to the Canadian Football League. Willy played a key role for the rough riders when Darian Durant was injured mid way through the season.

Willy put in his most important performance in July, starting for Durant in a game against Hamilton, Willy was 14-for-25 for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns leading the Roughriders to a 32-20 victory. Willy did not see action in the game, but we were one QB injury each away from a Drew Willy-Dan LeFevour Grey Cup matchup.

After the season there was noise that he might be taken in the CFL expansion draft by the Ottawa Redblacks but the new team went in a different direction leaving the valuable Willy as a tool for trade by Saskatchewan.

The Ottawa RedBlacks took free-agent Henry Burris who was a primary target of Winnipeg. Winnipeg GM Kyle Walters called Willy an upgrade at quarterback for the Blue Bombers.
