99 for 99 - #99: 1st MAC Win

99 for 99 takes a look at the 99 biggest moments in UB Football history in anticipation of the 99th Season of UB Football which begins on September 1st, 2012. These moments are not in any order, however the top 10 moments have been saved for last.

September 23, 2000 - First MAC Win Breaks 18 game losing streak...Duane Williams sets UB single game record with 4 sacks.

UB's first season in D-1A resulted in 11 loses and no wins. UB started 2000 looking like the worst team in the nation, losing 63-7 at Syracuse and 59-0 at Rutgers. In the home opener against UConn, UB saw the light at the end of the tunnel, but alas ended the game behind 24-21, losing their 18th straight game.

In the 4th quarter of the Bowling Green game, fate seemed to doom the Bulls again. Joe Freedy threw touchdown passes to Chad Bartoszek and Andre Forde, but Buffalo trailed 14-13 due to a missed extra point. UB's defense played well, holding the Bowling Green added to the lead with a 32 yard field goal. The UB defense held strong, holding Bowling Green to only 75 yards in the second half, and 175 for the game. UB sacked Bowling Green 6 times and knocked Bowling Greens starting Quarterback out of the game.

UB amassed 247 yards of offense, but were derailed by 3 turnovers. UB down 4, got the ball on their own 20, with 4 minutes remaining in the game. Joe Freedy went 4-4 on the drive, completing a key pass on 3rd and 7 to Brandon Shaughnessy, and on the next play an 11 yard strike to Dahnel Singfield to the 11. The next play, Marquis Dwarte, the backup running back took a pitch and scampered 27 yards for the go ahead touchdown.

Bowling Green had one last chance to tie it, but they almost squandered it when Marcus Cole sacked the Bowling Green Quarterback who fumbled. Bowling Green recovered but were faced with a 4th and 28. Duane Williams sealed the game with his record setting 4th sack to give the ball back to UB.

The win was UB's first MAC win, snapped an 18 game losing streak, and was UB's first win against a Division-1A team in 30 years.
