Women’s Hoops goes nuclear on Akron, improves to 8-6 in the MAC

81-51 and it wasn’t that close.

At 2-11 in the MAC this year, Akron’s not a great team nor a great challenge for UB Women’s Basketball. The Bulls could have likely sleepwalked through this one much as they did in a narrow, sluggish road win over EMU earlier this week.

Instead, we got the Monstars. An 8-0 run to open the game only set the tone for Buffalo, who hit the half with a UConn-like 45-13 lead, then sped. up., scoring 20 more points in the first five minutes out of the break and extending the lead to 44 at 65-21.

I don’t know if you need to know the final score, but after the UB starters got the Steph Curry treatment, it ended at 81-51.

The usual excelled for Buffalo, with Joanna Smith hitting five triples, Stephanie Reid piling 9 assists by midway through the third quarter, finishing with a double-double, 17 and 11, and Cassie Oursler adding 13. Summer Hemphill added a quiet 9 rebounds, while Akron’s Hannah Plybon was held to just 8 points.

As much as you’d love to bask in this a little longer, there’s not much more to say. When UB plays like this, they can beat anyone in the MAC, but it doesn’t always happen.

The Bulls improve to 8-6 in conference and will close out their home slate this week with Ohio and Bowling Green. If today is the start of something, it’s a heck of a way to start.
