The Buffalo Bulls women's basketball team stayed home for a matchup. This particular matchup gave the fans their money's worth as the game stayed close for all four quarters. Buffalo really needed this win if they wanted their best situation in MAC tournament seeding to unfold. The women played with a lot of heart and came out victorious in the 55-52 win.
The first quarter started with a stagnant Bulls defense. Bowling Green opened things up on a 10-2 run. Buffalo would calm down and do what they do best and clamp down on the Falcons. The Bulls went on a 12-2 run of their own and gained a 14-12 advantage at the end of the quarter. One of the highlights here was UB taking full advantage of the boards and out-rebounding their opponent 10-6.
The second quarter started out very similar to that of the first. Once the women let up on the press, Bowling Green attacked the 3-2 zone hard with much success. Turnovers also started becoming a problem on both sides as each team finished the half with 9 points. Gabi Bade had a great quarter as she drained two threes and accumulated 6 of the 14 Buffalo points for that quarter. After 20 minutes, the Bulls trailed the Falcons by a point with a 29-28 margin.
The next half opened up with a quick tempo. It was clear that Bowling Green would be controlling the tempo tonight. Stephanie Reid got things going quickly in order to keep up with the BG offense as she sent two quick layups up for four points.UB would then see another flash of good defense as Cassie Oursler drew a foul and tied the game up at 38 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Bulls completely clamped down on defense for the rest of the quarter as they led 40-38 with one more increment of ten minutes to go.
The fourth quarter instantly became a slug fest. The Bulls and the Falcons kept it tight for the rest of the game. After trailing 48-50 very late in the quarter, all of the calls started going the Bulls way. UB seemed to want this win more than Bowling Green and win is what they did. The women's hopes for a home playoff game are still alive and well after a 55-52 win.
The Bulls were lead by floor general Stephanie Reid. She took home 14 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. Joanna Smith had a somewhat tough day as she couldn't drain a three. But, she still managed a 10 point effort with 6 rebounds.
Despite the exciting finish, the Bulls are left with their work cut out for them. They now have a two game road trip with the first game at Ohio. UB has beaten Ohio but they need to prove that it wasn't a fluke. Tip-off is at 1:00 PM on Saturday and the game will air on ESPN3.
