Penn State Nittany Lions vs Buffalo Bulls football: First Half recap

+

All week. Penn State fans have been telling us that we've been overestimating the offenses on both sides of the ball. So far, they've been proven correct, helped by a ton of rain and a waterlogged field.

Neither team has been able to do much of anything on offense, though Penn State has had some success grinding out first downs thanks to their physical advantage.

UB has shot themselves in the foot offensively with far too many penalties: 8 total for 60 yards, and has been completely overwhelmed by the Nittany Lion defensive line when forced into obvious passing situations.

Penn State despite the 10-0 lead has not looked overly impressive. Their touchdown came after a big punt return set up a short field, and despite an apparent false start from RB Brandon Polk, and they added to the lead on another short field after Joe Licata was swarmed and intercepted on - you guessed it - an obvious passing down.

Anthone Taylor and Jordan Johnson have combined for 14 carries for 60 yards. If Buffalo can cut down on the penalties and make some halftime adjustments there could be something there. Nick Gilbo, Brandon Berry, and Okezie Alozie all have four tackles for the defense, which has held PSU to just 126 net yards.

Penn State was driving in the final minute of the half, but finished without building on their ten-point lead when offensive lineman Andrew Nelson went down with an apparent knee injury and the Nittany Lions had no timeouts to avoid a ten-second runoff.
