A lot of people, including some around our own water cooler, saw UB having a slight rebuilding year this season. Nobody predicted a “bad” year, just that there might be a slight bit of falloff because of graduation.
That talk got a wee bit louder when Summer Hemphill was lost for the fall.
But the Ladies have proven themselves to be every bit as scrappy as the Boys this season. While the Men have gotten a lot of attention for their comeback win against West Virginia the Women have compiled a 4-1 record including a win over South Dakota State, a team that was getting AP votes at the time.
The only Blemish on their record is a loss on the road to #3 Oregon.
Cierra Dillard has been the key to how this team has dealt with the absence of Hemphill.
She was already the only Mid Major player on the Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List before she went off last week against Georgetown and South Dakota State. Currently Dillard is the nations leading scorer.
If she stays anywhere near her current pace she should easily make the mid-season cut down the the last 30 players.
UB has been doing all of this on the road. The Bulls have not played a game at Alumni since October 14th and they won’t be home until December 21st when they have a huge match-up with Stanford.
