Since Coach Stutzman has been at UB, Columbia has been a bit of a thorn in the Bulls’ side. However, the tide has turned and the Bulls dominated the Lions from start to finish by a team score of 32-3, with UB winning 9 of the 10 matches. This was the Bulls’ first win over Columbia since the 2000-2001 season. UB improved to 5-3 in dual meets on the season.

UB started with five straight victories from Kyle Akins, Bryan Lantry, Jason Estevez, Colt Cotten and Alex Smythe. Tyler Rill was the Bulls’ only loss at 165 pounds and even then it was in a thrilling 2-1 triple overtime decision to Tyrel White a two-time NCAA qualifier. Muhamed McBryde, Brett Perry, Nate Rose and Jake Gunning rounded out the Buffalo victors.

Columbia was unable to score many points on the mat with UB on giving up four through the first five bouts and 14 throughout the entire dual meet, an impressive number to be sure. UB wrestled smart and wrestled disciplined throughout, avoiding treacherous body positioning and dictating the pace of their matches.

Individually, Jason Estevez had the most impressive win of the dual, sticking Jacob Macololooy in just over a minute’s time. Brett Perry and Nate Rose also had impressive outings for the Bulls. Perry in particular wrestled one of the finest matches of his season in a dominant 10-2 major decision victory, earning four takedowns along the way. Finally, Jake Gunning avenged an 8-4 loss from last season to Columbia’s Garrett Ryan in a thrilling 6-3 decision, earning a takedown just before the buzzer to seal his win over the two-time NCAA qualifier.

Overall, an impressive top-to-bottom team win for UB and one that is a nice momentum boost after the start of the new year. UB will take to the mat tomorrow against Sacred Heart at Alumni Arena at 1 PM and the match can be seen on ESPN3.
