Preview: Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball to take on preseason MAC favorite Ohio

New, 14 comments

UB Women’s Basketball took down Miami with ease but now an even bigger challenge presents itself. The Bulls now head out onto the toughest remaining road trip this season where they’ll first play Ohio. The Bobcats are the preseason favorites to win the Mid-American Conference Championship.

As head coach of the Bobcats, Bob Boldon has rejuvenated the program. Boldon enters his fourth season coming off of back-to-back seasons of 26 or more wins and already has a MAC Championship to his name. His leadership has helped the Bobcats become a perennial mid-major power.

Ohio currently sits at 10-2 overall as they tore through their non-conference slate. Although the loss to Michigan isn’t bad, the real question mark is placed next to their loss to North Carolina A&T. Ohio’s schedule so far has been pretty easy, so it’s tough to gauge how good they really are this year without star Kiyanna Black.

Quiera Lampkins is the threat that the Bobcats have possession of. Lampkins is the reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Year and she’s averaging 19.8 points per game. Although she doesn’t think anything about Buffalo when she gets beaten by them, UB will have to keep her in mind if they want to win this game. Bulls fans should also watch for Ohio’s best interior threat in Jasmine Witherspoon, who currently averages 9.8 points a contest.

What to watch for

1. Will Ohio fall in the same fashion as before?

UB’s defense did everything it needed to in MAC play last year to completely dismantle the best team in the conference three consecutive times. Ohio tries to be a high scoring team, so we’ll see if the Bulls prevent that from happening.

2. Shutting down Lampkins

UB’s recipe for defeating Ohio last season involved the Bulls phasing out their top two scorers in Kiyanna Black and Quiera Lampkins. With Black gone, the Bulls only have one player that scores a lot of points. If they can hold Lampkins to another bad showing like, this win is a sure thing.

3. JoAnna Smith

We’re getting pretty close to the half way mark in the season and the dominance from JoAnna Smith hasn’t been there. Maybe I’ll eat crow for writing the last sentence, but it’ll be interesting to see if she can return to form year in this final stretch of the season.

Also, Smith is currently just 6 points away from reaching a career mark of 1,000.

4. How the bench performs

UB has seen their entire bench make an impact throughout this season and now that they’re matched up with a much tougher opponent, we’ll see if the same trend continues. If so, this is going to be an incredibly tough team to beat in MAC play.
