Buffalo Bulls Women's Basketball Recap: Reid's second quarter and Buffalo's stifling defense gets a solid 63-50 win over Bowling Green

UB Athletics

Coming into the day, inconsistency continued to be the story for the women's basketball team. Things were looking up until their loss to Toledo where the play was reminiscent of their five game losing streak. Today, the Bulls looked much better in a game that showed great defense and offense at points. Thanks to the great effort, Buffalo got back on track with a 63-50 win over Bowling Green.

The first quarter saw defense being played early and a slower tempo than what the Bulls played in their game against Toledo. Problems showed up though as Bowling Green started attacking the post and played tough defense as well. UB also committed 7 turnovers. After the first ten minutes, the Bulls trailed 14-6.

Shots started to fall in the second quarter as Joanna Smith opened the flood gates. Right after the Smith two point jumper, Stephanie Reid kept the fuse lit. Reid would go on and score the next 8 points to bring the deficit to two. Unfortunately, the Bulls left gaps in the defense and Bowling Green quickly opened their lead back up. Reid wasn't giving up as she and the rest of the team kept clawing back into it and clamped down on defense. UB finished off the tremendous half as they lead 37-33.

The second half opened with a quicker tempo as the Bulls and the Falcons slugged it out offensively. Defense picked back up by the halfway mark of the third quarter as Buffalo held a slim three point lead. Bowling Green kept things tight as the Bulls went into the final quarter with a 48-44 advantage.

UB hit the ground running in the fourth quarter and didn't look back as the Bulls started opening up a solid lead in the early going. Bowling Green just couldn't get anything going as they only had three points in five minutes to begin the first half of the quarter.

It was a great day for Stephanie Reid as she finished things off with 21 points and 4 assists. Fourteen of those points came in the second quarter alone. Joanna Smith also had a great day as she finished the day with a near double-double effort of 11 points and 9 rebounds. One of the bigger surprises today was Mirte Scheper as she had 11 points and 6 rebounds. This was back to back games where she was in the starting lineup.

The road trip is over now as Buffalo returns home for a nice three game home stand. The win moves Buffalo to 12-11 overall and to 4-8 in MAC play. The Bulls will take on Eastern Michigan this Wednesday. Tip-off is set 7:00 PM and the game will air on ESPN3.
