The women's basketball team took a trip to Toledo tonight with the hopes of getting back on track. The Bulls are coming off an upset win over Ohio and a tough to stomach loss versus Ball State. Things didn't play into Buffalo's hands for much of the night as Toledo controlled the pace and shot very well. Many of the older issues that happened before the Ohio game cropped up as well and the Bulls eventually fell 71-60.
The first quarter saw high tempo basketball and an efficient offense from the Bulls. Unfortunately, uptempo play hasn't won the women too many games. Toledo would cruise through the quarter as the Bulls left the post open way too much. This created a small 17-14 margin for the Bulls to comeback from. The second quarter saw some better defense being played and Joanna Smith shooting lights out. About halfway through, she shot two threes and a two point jumper all in a row. Only four Bulls scored a bucket in the first half as they practically knotted things up with a 29-28 lead.
The second half did not start the way the Bulls had envisioned. Toledo opened things up with an 8-0 run that eventually was snapped by a Gabi Bade three pointer. Toledo kept running through UB like a freight train though as the Bulls could not muster up any perimeter defense at the under 7 mark in the third quarter. Things started looking bleak but the Bulls clawed back at the end of the 3rd quarter trailing 46-40. The fourth quarter was much of the same as UB couldn't find any of the defense they needed to win the game.
The Bulls were lead once again by Joanna Smith. She tallied up a solid 20 points. Cassie Oursler also had a great night. She had 10 points off of 5-7 shooting. Oursler also had 5 rebounds to her stat line. Stephanie Reid heated up late as she managed to score 13 points. She also had 6 assists and 5 boards on the night.
Bulls remain on the road as we see them next on Saturday at Bowling Green. Tip-off is at 4:00 PM and is set to air on ESPN3. More on this game will be featured in the usual takeaways.
