Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball opens up MAC play with a win over the Miami RedHawks 71-45 on New Year’s Eve

With their undefeated start coming to an end against Harvard, Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball got back on track to open up Mid-American Conference play. The Miami RedHawks proved to be no match for Buffalo, surrendering this game 71-45 as they couldn’t get past Buffalo’s defense.

It wasn’t the best start to the game as it looked like UB was shaking off some rust from their loss to Harvard. Miami quickly unloaded from three and got to the line to trail only 6-5 to the Bulls. UB’s freshmen took over from there as Summer Hemphill and Theresa Onwuka brought in contributions to help bring UB to a 20-13 first quarter lead.

Buffalo’s play in the second quarter featured one of the biggest offensive droughts the team has seen all season as UB went over four minutes without scoring the ball. As the quarter winded down, JoAnna Smith would hit a jumper that opened the flood gates for the Bulls, allowing them to pull away from Miami.

Courtney Wilkins would hit a three to succeed that and find an opportunity to get to the free throw line. The half closed with an and-one from Stephanie Reid that brought UB’s run in the final two minutes to 10-0. Going into the half the Bulls lead 34-23.

UB’s second half adjustments proved to be just what they needed. The Bulls poured on too much offense for the RedHawks to handle. UB’s defense also proved to be efficient as midway through the third quarter, it was almost 10 minutes of play dating back to the last half that they last scored. UB’s starters soon subbed out and the depth of this team took over, stretching the lead to a 53-32 margin.

UB continued to cruise to get their 11th win of the season and their first of Mid-American Conference play. The Bulls were lead by JoAnna Smith’s 11 points. Smith is now just six shy of 1,000 career points. Theresa Onwuka also had a fantastic night, drilling in a career high 10 points. We also saw the best production from Ayoleka Sodade since she came to Buffalo with 8 points on the night.

Buffalo is back in action with a tough road trip coming up starting on January 4th. The Bulls will be taking on the Ohio Bobcats to assert who’s the best in the conference early. Tip-off is at 7:00PM and the game will air on ESPN3.
