Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball Recap: Bulls find their way past UMass with exceptional play from Katherine Ups. Final Score: 61-47

A week after their exhibition game with Bloomsburg, the Buffalo Bulls Women’s Basketball team opened up their regular season with a matchup versus UMass. The Bulls never gave up the lead throughout the entire game thanks to an early cushion built by Katherine Ups and others. With that being said, the Bulls easily started the season off with a 61-47 win.

The opening quarter sure was a shock to those sitting in Alumni Arena. While playing excellent defense, UB was relentless on offense. JoAnna Smith and Katherine Ups both rattled off two three-pointers each followed by a Stephanie Reid layup. This quick offensive showing gave the Bulls a 14-0 advantage. Ups continued her strong play and already had 11 points by the time the quarter finished.

The team looked much different in the second quarter. The offense completely stalled as the Bulls were only able to score 6 points before the half. Luckily, the Bulls’ defense was just as effective as the quarter prior. Buffalo entered the half winning 26-16.

Buffalo continued to struggle on offense throughout the second half. Both JoAnna Smith and Cassie Oursler fouled out before game’s end. UMass was able to get to within four points and make it a game, until the Bulls erupted once more. The game was finally sealed thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Gabi Bade.

This was arguably Katherine Ups’ best game since coming to Buffalo. The junior racked up 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in the Bulls win. Not only that, but this performance was done with 60% shooting.

Before fouling out, Cassie Oursler also had a strong night pulling in 13 points and 4 rebounds. Summer Hemphill showed once again how much of an impact she’ll bring as a freshman. She fell just short of a double-double thanks to her 8 points and 9 rebounds. Hemphill’s ability to draw fouls is easily the best on the team.

The Bulls continue their home heavy non-conference schedule next week. We’ll see them back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when they take on the Niagara Purple Eagles. Tipoff is at 7:00PM and the game will air on ESPN3.
