Buffalo Bulls Women's Basketball Preview: Sophomore forward Mariah Suchan

UB Athletics

For the first semester, at least, Suchan is the most experienced forward UB has even though she only saw action in ten games last season.

The Basics

Number: 21
Year: Sophomore
Position: Forward
Hometown: Wichita, KS
Height: 6-1

New Girl?

Nope, Mariah has been with the team for a year.

UB Career

As mentioned above, Suchan only played in 10 games last year, averaging 3.5 minutes a contest, though she provided more quality minutes as a sub later in the season on Senior Day and in the MAC Tournament, especially on the defensive end. Suchan did pull down eight rebounds and get three steals in those 35 minutes, but was just 1-6 from the floor. She's a former first-team All State performer in Kansas, so there's talent there as her career progresses.

2015-16 Outlook

I am encouraged by Suchan's play late in the 2014-15 season: in 17 combined minutes against Akron, Western Michigan and West Virginia, she pulled down four rebounds while playing solid defense and staying out of foul trouble. At the time, it's what you ask for when putting out a deep bench option.

This year, Suchan is in line for many more minutes, likely whether she's ready or not. I could see Brittany Wilkins playing more forward minutes, but however it happens until Cassie Oursler is eligible, Suchan's going to see plenty of the floor. If she can contribute offensively, she's sneaky tall at 6-1 and can be a rock at both ends for the young Bulls.
