Kent State comes from behind for 3-1 win over Buffalo Volleyball

UB Athletics

Cassie Shado hit for 15 kills and no errors and UB took the first set on Superhero Night in Alumni Arena, but Megan Lipski had an off day by her recent standards and Kent State won three consecutive sets to drop Volleyball in four, 21-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-20, Friday night.

Looking to move a to 3-2 in the MAC, UB enjoyed a narrow lead through much of the first set and iced the opening frame with a 6-0 run after Kent State had drawn even at 17. A pair of aces from Megan Lin and a pair of kills from Shado - who had seven in the first - spurred that run. The second set was similarly narrow, but Kent State found a small advantage late. Four aces from the visitors spurred them to a third set win, and a combination of aces and Lipski attack errors doomed UB in the fourth.

Kelsey Bittinger, who feasted on the Bulls last year, was held to 10 kills and .111 hitting, but Kent State succeeded thanks to Kelly Hutchison's 21 kills and .436 hitting. The Golden Flashes hit .365 with just nine errors in their three winning sets after committing nine in the first set alone. They also served for ten errors, the second MAC team to do so against UB this year.

After Shado and Lipski (11), Valisha Watkins (9) and Megan Wernette (8) led UB in kills, but only Shado hit better than .200 on the evening. Four different Bulls had nine or more digs, and Megan Lin served for three aces, though all came in the first set. UB did have seven blocks, but Kent State had 10.

Next up for the Bulls is MAC leader Ohio, who swept Akron this evening. The two teams will face off tomorrow at 7:00 PM in Alumni Arena.
