As camp is winding down the Bulls are running two a day practices. The evening practice was under the lights at UB Stadium with players in full pads.

On the defensive side of the ball Solomon Jackson is turning out to be has shown promise at the defensive end spot since making the move from linebacker. He provided pressure off the edge and got to quarterback on more than a couple of times.

Jackson is likely going to be starting on the defensive line along with Max Perisse, Brandon Crawford, Demone Harris.

Freshman quarterback Tyree Jackson looked great in the scrimmage last Saturday and continues to impress. Among his throws last night was a perfect deep ball to K.J. Osborn that went for an 80-yard touchdown.

The New UB receivers had a good day. Collin Lisa should be a reliable part of the offense and Sweet Home product \ Brandon Smiley had a couple of nice catches on the night.

Smiley is a freshman so he may not be a huge part of the offense this season but Coach Leipold has said that if a Freshman can contribute and is big enough to stay healthy he has no issue playing them.

There was not a lot of notes out there for UB's running backs yesterday but I found a great article on UB's 1-2 punch.

Taylor, Johnson Pack Bulls 1-2 Punch
"It's a coincidence that we both wear 1 and 2 (Taylor wears jersey No. 1; Johnson No. 2)," Johnson said. "It should be a fun and exciting season. Hopefully we both stay healthy. We run behind a great offensive line. As well as we succeed, it comes off of what they do for us."

Jeff Quinn had a habit of running his goto back 30 times a game, hopefully Lance Leipold has instincts to not overwork the backs.

A good story on UB walk on lineman Jacob Bryan who did a hitch in the Marines before going to college.

UB walk-on lineman learned goal-setting in Marine Corps
Byron, the University at Buffalo’s 24-year-old sophomore offensive lineman, served four years in the Marines. After graduating from Marion High School, about 105 miles to the northeast of Buffalo, Byron wasn’t exactly sure what his next step was.

It's safe to say that if anyone can shrug off the pressure of an NCAA football camp it would be Byron.

Finally the UB Football Video team's facebook page has some nice pictures from yesterday's practices.

News, notes, tweets, and more from Coach Lance Leipold's first media day.

We're ten days into the 2015 training camp for the Buffalo Bulls football team and today was the annual media day where the local media descended upon UB Stadium to talk with the players and Coach Leipold and it helps give us a better insight into the inner workings of Coach Leipold's program.

First up, a lengthy Q&A session with Coach Leipold - which revealed a few key pieces of information about this year's squad:

One of the key highlights was Leipold's comments on the progress of the defense; he said that the defensive as a whole is coming along well and that throughout the summer it will still be a "work in progress". Leipold also praised several members of the defensive line citing thier ability to be "disruptors" in different meanings of the work. Leipold specifically mentioned junior defensive tackles Brandon Crawford, and Max Perisse, and defensive ends Demone Harris and Solomon Jackson, the latter of whom I covered in my Making the Leap series this summer. Leipold also praised the progress of Chris Ford, a big-bodied (6-2, 315) defensive tackle who could be a force in the run game this season.

When speaking on the offense, Leipold noted that the offense would be "multiple" in that the personnel groupings and playcalling will be tailored to the game situation and the down-and-distance situations, which a very promising sign that the playcalling will be improved from seasons past. Leipold also praised the depth of the wide receiver corps, and of the running backs. Leipold specifically mentioned how the extreme depth of the running backs gives the offense multiple new dimensions where you have a proven 1,000 yard rusher in Anthone Taylor, a quality backup in Jordan Johnson, a bruiser and goalline back such as Gary Hosey, and freshman Johnathan Hawkins who has looked impressive in his own right.

Leipold also mentioned that he recognizes that in an area like Buffalo, and in the footprint where the MAC is, that the running game would be a focal point because during some situations you just can't throw the ball as well. From his comments, it's easy to see that the offense will be as run-heavy as last season.

Leipold also stressed how offseason work is critical for the development of the team as a whole, mentioning in passing how a field house for the winter months could speed the development of the team (Hint, hint!)

Leipold also said that Joe Licata would be the starting quarterback - so no surprises there.

***

Speaking of Joe, his interview from media day:

Licata, mentioned that learning a new offense was a challenge with learning the new terminology, but in the end "football is football". Licata went on to express his gratefulness for the depth in the running game, and quality of the tackles to help keep the pressure off of him and keep the offense balanced. Licata also praised the tight ends, Matt Weiser and Mason Schreck, saying that they "are some of the most invaluable assets" to the team.

***

Cornerback Boise Ross' Q&A session:

RIght away one of the key points of Ross' interview is the change in expectations from last season to this season. He also cited how his time playing at wide receiver has eased his transition to the defensive backfield, saying that knowing what the receivers are going to do allows him to better plan and attack. Ross also said that "As long as we're doing our jobs; this defense can go anywhere" excellent confidence coming from the third year corner.

Last but certainly not least in our football position previews, is the Bulls' special teams unit. Special teams is just as important during a game as offense or defense is; the special teamers can flip field position and can be the difference between winning and losing a game. UB lost kicker Patrick Clarke this offseason due to graduation and there will be a new face on kicking duties while there will be a familiar pair of faces in the other specialist positions.

Projected Starters

Kicker - Adam Mitcheson, R-Fr., 6-1, 187 - Patrick Clarke's replacement, Mitcheson redshirted last season and will take over kickoff, field goal and extra point duties. Mitcheson will have the unenviable task of being a young guy that has to shoulder a great amount responsibility at one of the most important positions on the field. However, MItcheson won field goal accuracy and length competitions while in high school and was 12 of 16 with a long of 50 yards his senior season. Mitcheson did kick in Pennsylvania so he is no stranger to the elements, but kicking in the Buffalo wind is a whole different beast. Mitcheson is one of the biggest question marks on this team coming into the season; if he is able to hit field goals consistently then he will become a valuable asset, if he struggles with accuracy, much like his predecessor Clarke, then the Bulls could be in trouble.

Punter - Tyler Grassman, Sr., 6-0, 192 - Grassman snagged the starting punting job during his freshman season and hasn't looked back since. Over the past two seasons he has averaged over 40 yards per punt, an invaluable asset when the offense may sputter at times. Grassman has the ability to flip the field and pin the opponent back deep in their own territory, giving the advantage to the UB defense. He may not have the longest punts in the MAC, but where Grassman excels the most is his ability to limit returns. Last season only 9 of his 50 punts were returned for only a measly 32 yards (and one return was for 16 yards so 8 of the returns combined for 16 yards). For his efforts Grassman was named to the Ray Guy Award Watchlist for the Nation's top punter. Expect Grassman to continue his solid play through his senior season, he's been a dependable player during his entire tenure and there's no reason to think otherwise for this season. #PuntersArePeopleToo

Long Snapper - Corbin Grassman, Jr., 6-2, 200 - Normally, you don't talk about your team's long snapper unless he botches snaps and has serious errors; luckily, we haven't had to talk about Corbin Grassman in that light during his tenure at UB. The long snapper is a thankless job that largely goes unnoticed to the untrained eye, but Grassman has done an excellent job after taking over the long snapping duties during his freshman campaign. It wasn't until about a week or so ago that Corbin's cousin Tyler posted a video of him snapping a ball across the locker room and knocking a Gatorade bottle clean off of Tyler's head, that Corbin started being talked about. Then, Tyler posted another video of Corbin snapping a ball from the 300 level of UB Stadium into a trash can on the field below and he went even more viral on the web. Corbin was on ESPN, BleacherReport, NFL.com, among other major outlets and he had suddenly become a star. And while the other MAC long snappers futilely try to replicate the viral success of Corbin, we all can take solace in the fact that our long snapper is better than all the rest. Oh, and the viral videos are a great marketing tool for a guy looking to play in the NFL where there are only 32 spots available.

So that wraps up the football positional previews - I hope these have been helpful and allowed you to get a better insight into the depth and talent on the roster, and maybe even formulate a picture for what the starting lineup will look like week one against Albany. Be sure to check out any of the other positions that were covered over the past week, and to check out the Olympic team previews which were also posted last week.

OFFENSE

The Starters - QB: Licata. RB: Taylor. FB: Patterson. TE: Weiser. LT: Kling. LG: Guy. C: O’Hagan. RG: Manosalvas. RT: Blodgett. WR: Willoughby, Lisa.

The offense seems ready to go even through the season is nearly three weeks away. Joe Licata set the tone in yesterdays first scrimmage by driving his offense on an 11 play 70 yard drive the first time they touched the ball. Licata capped the march with a 9-yard touchdown pass to UB's number one receiver Ron Willoughby.

On the drive UB's Anthone Taylor hit runs of 19 and 13 yards.

On the second drive the offense went 50 yards for a score. Once again it was a touchdown pass, this time to Marcus McGill who's two yard touchdown reception was set up by his own 17-yard sideline reception.

DEFENSE:

The Starters - DL: Solomon Jackson, Max Perisse, Brandon Crawford, Demone Harris. LB: Okezie Alozie, Nick Gilbo, Kyril Threats. CB: Boise Ross, Marqus Baker. S: Ryan Williamson, Andrews Dadeboe.

It's really looking like the standout in the secondary is going to be Boise Ross, the junior who was moved over from receiver by Jeff Quinn early last season.

Today it was a mixed bag. A red-zone holding call on Ross kept the second drive alive. Later, however, Ross made a fine, diving interception on the sideline. On balance the secondary was not up to holding back the UB quarterbacks. Even freshman Tyree Jackson, looked good. He hit J.R. Zazzara on a 32-yard slant-and-run for a TD. Later Jackson threw a 14-yard dart over the middle for a TD to Brandon Smiley (Sweet Home).

After losing three seniors to graduation, and with two of those seniors ending up in NFL camps and the third in the CFL there is plenty of playing time up for grabs this fall. The graduations notwithstanding, there is actually plenty of depth along the offensive line, with several young redshirt freshmen looking to step in and make an impact alongside the few returning veterans. It's an old saying that football games are won and lost in the trenches, and it will be no different for this year's UB squad, as the offensive line will dictate the success of Coach Leipold's offense.

Projected Starters

LT - John Kling, Sr., 6-8, 320 - After starting 16 games over the last two years, Kling brings a wealth of experience to the most important position on the offensive line: protecting Joe Licata's blindside. Kling will make the switch to left tackle after spending last season at right tackle, where he was the road grading bookend to current Ottawa REDBLACK Jake Silas. Kling brings with him legitimate NFL size (they don't call him Kling Kong for nothing) and strength to stonewall any bull rush that will be thrown at him. Kling will be the cornerstone of the offensive line this season and will look to keep Joe Licata's jersey clean; and the longer its kept clean the better the offense as a whole will perform.

LG - Dillon Guy, Sr., 6-4, 318 - After sitting out last season as a medical redshirt, Guy seems to be back to his pre-injury form and will look to make an impact in the run game and form a formidable duo with LT John Kling. Guy appeared in 11 games and started 6 as a true freshman way back in 2011 and was a difference maker at guard, since he's been one of the team's top reserves and has spot started throughout the years. In his final season Guy will look to start every game for the first time in his career, but there will be plenty of young guns looking to compete for playing time.

C - James O'Hagan, R-Fr., 6-2, 293 - One of several redshirt freshmen along the offensive line, O'Hagan has been running with the first team throughout the spring and looks to have locked down the starting center spot following the departure of Trevor Sales. The center-quarterback exchange is one of the most important sequences of every single play, and inconsistencies in the chemistry between quarterback and center can result in dire mistakes for the offense. O'Hagan is a former champion wrestler with ideal size for a center and will hopefully develop into a linchpin for the offensive line.

RG - Brandon Manosalvas, So., 6-4, 307 - Appearing in 9 games and starting two as a freshman, Manosalvas has been working with the first unit offensive line since the start of the spring practices. Manosalvas brings excellent size to the right side of the line and will look to be part of a road grading tandem with Bobby Blodgett. However, Manosalvas will have several players breathing down his neck for playing time.

RT - Bobby Blodgett, Sr., 6-5, 310 - A jack-of-all-trades lineman that has played at both right guard and right tackle during his tenure at UB, Blodgett brings with him versatility and experience that will be invaluable to the offensive line. Blodgett was the starting right guard for the past two seasons, helping pave the way for two of the highest rushing seasons in program history. Blodgett has good size for the right tackle spot, and even if he may not be the best in pass protection, he and Manosalvas as a pair will look to be the lead men in Lance Leipold's power running game to lead Anthone Taylor to another record breaking season.

Backups

Skylar Hartley, R-Fr., 6-1, 323 - Hartley is one of several redshirt freshmen that will be fighting for playing time at center or guard. Hartley has been the 2nd team center for much of the spring, and he brings a stout and strong presence to the interior of the UB line.

Todd Therrien, Sr., 6-1, 287 - Therrien has been a reserve offensive lineman after making the switch from the defensive line after walking on to the team and earning a scholarship. Therrien will likely be a key reserve for the interior backing up both guard positions and center.

Matt Murphy, R-Fr., 6-5, 301 - One of the more intriguing prospects on the offensive line, Murphy, the Ireland native will be the primary backup to John Kling at left tackle as he has led the 2nd team offensive line throughout the spring. Murphy is a technically sound blocker and will be the heir apparent to Kling at the left tackle spot, he may see time as a backup this season but expect him to be the starter next season.

Roubbens Joseph, Jr., 6-4, 300 - Coming to UB as a JUCO transfer from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York, Joseph will be competing for playing time at right guard behind Brandon Manosalvas. He played tackle for HVCC and was ranked as one of the top 50 tackles in JUCO, but will kick inside to guard where he can put his strength to use in the power run game.

Tyler O'Henly, So., 6-7, 302 - The London, Ontario native will be competing for playing time at tackle this season after appearing in two games as a reserve last season. O'Henly will likely only play in a reserve role this season but will challenge for the starting right tackle job in the future.

Trey Bowman, Jr., 6-4, 285 - A late addition to Leipold's first recruiting class, Bowman comes to UB by way of Iowa Western CC where he helped lead the Reivers to the NJCAA Championship Game and was their top offensive lineman. Bowman is a name to watch as he's stepped into the left guard spot on the second team offense and, by all accounts, has performed well. Bowman has the skill and experience to seriously challenge for one of the starting guard spots this season.

Andy Fidler, R-Fr., 6-6, 284 - Fidler is another one of the deep class of redshirt freshmen on the offensive line and has been working at both guard and right tackle on the second unit offensive line. Fidler, like many of the other linemen will be looking to work through the logjam to see the field this fall. Fidler also has the Wisconsin connection with head coach Lance Leipold, he played high school in Port Washington, WI and is the only Wisconsin native on the roster.

Albert McCoy, Jr., 6-3, 294 - After making the move to the offensive line after playing on the defensive line in his true freshman season, McCoy will likely be a key reserve for several spots on the line. He's worked at right tackle and at guard, and will be a veteran presence off the bench for the Bulls.

Bill Galley, R-Fr., 6-7, 285 - A local product who was a former walk-on to the team who will provide depth at offensive tackle.

Jacob Byron, R-So., 6-2, 241 - A former United States Marine who walked onto the team, Byron was originally at tight end but was moved to the offensive line. He'll likely see the field as an extra offensive lineman in jumbo sets and could even see time at tight end or in an H-Back role.

David Meyer, R-Fr., 6-3, 298 - Another former walk-on who will provide depth along the interior of the offensive line.

Incoming Freshmen

Evin Ksiezarczyk, Fr., 6-5, 315 - A three year starter at offensive tackle for West Seneca East High School in the Southtowns, Ksiezarczyk brings excellent size to the UB offensive line and will likely redshirt this upcoming season due to the depth in front of him at tackle.

In defensive coordinator Brian Borland's new 4-3 base scheme, the defensive line will play a key part in the successes of the defense as a whole. The new 1 gap scheme that the defense will run puts a large responsibility on the defensive line to wreak havoc on the offensive line and make opposing quarterbacks' lives nightmares. The defensive line will also be the primary source of the UB pass-rush which will look to be reinvigorated after a down year last season. There is a solid group of veterans along the interior of the line with a young core of newcomers and converted linebackers that will be competing for time at both defensive end spots.

There is plenty of depth along the line with guys that have unique combinations of size, speed and strength that will give Brian Borland the tools to make defensive line combinations that can adapt to any situation.

Projected Starters

DE - Solomon Jackson, So., 6-2, 233 - After redshirting in his first season at UB, Jackson served as a backup linebacker last season and played extensively on special teams. So far this spring, Jackson has ran with the 1st team defense at the weak side defensive end position. Even though he is undersized for a defensive end and has the build of a linebacker, Jackson can thrive in the weak side role because his primary responsibility will be to pin his ears back and get after the quarterback. In the spring game he had an impressive pair of "sacks" (I put sack in quotes because there was no contact allowed against the quarterbacks) against the first team offensive line showing off a ferocious motor. Jackson will likely rotate with several of the other players on this list, but if he is able to set the edge in the run game and be successful, he'll be on the field more often than not.

DT - Max Perisse, Jr., 6-4, 262 - Perisse also redshirted his first year at UB, but saw 12 and 10 games in his sophomore and junior year, respectively. He finished his sophomore season with 13 tackles (7 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble. Perisse has good inside size and an athletic nature. Although only being a junior, he will be expected to be a leader of the defensive line unit, which will not have a senior present on the squad. The positive of this will be that the entire defensive line will be returning next season.

DT - Brandon Crawford, Jr., 6-2, 275 - Crawford is the most game experienced member of the defensive line, having appeared in 18 games in his first two seasons and starting six. He was particularly impressive in his freshman season as one of only four true freshmen to play on the bowl team he had an impressive sack and forced fumble against San Diego State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. He transitioned from a hybrid linebacker/defensive end to a more traditional defensive tackle role last season and he thrived, putting consistent pressure on the pocket and registering three sacks. This season he will man the starting defensive tackle spot and the new 4-3 scheme will allow him to show off his pass-rushing prowess.

DE - Demone Harris, So., 6-4, 266 - Harris is a local product and walk-on from Bishop Timon-St. Jude who redshirted in his first season and appeared as a reserve defensive lineman last season. Harris has been running with the first team all spring long and into training camp. Harris has recorded several sacks during the 11-on-11 drills during the early stages of camp; he has excellent size for the strong side defensive end position, but will need to fend off several other players on this list for playing time during the season.

Backups

Corey Henderson, R-Fr., 6-4, 266 - Originally recruited as a linebacker, Henderson is one of several players who will be making the transition from linebacker to the defensive line. Henderson has good size and has been playing with the second team throughout the spring. There isn't much game tape on Henderson, but he will likely be part of the defensive line rotation and with his size he is capable of playing both defensive end and defensive tackle.

Randy Anyanwu, R-Fr., 6-2, 226 - Like Henderson and Jackson, Anyanwu is transitioning from linebacker to weak side defensive end. Anyanwu is a bit undersized like Jackson, but, like Jackson, Anyanwu can make up for the lack of size with his speed and unstoppable motor. In the spring game Anyanwu, like Jackson, also had a pair of sacks against the first team offense. Anyanwu has rotated in with the first team and worked with the second team throughout the spring and will look to compete with Jackson for the starting position at defensive end and will be at minimum a primary backup.

Myles Nicholas, R-Fr., 6-2, 236 - And yet another redshirt freshman that is making the transition from linebacker to defensive end, Nicholas is a WNY name to watch in the defensive end position battle. Nicholas has been working with the second team throughout the spring and will be competing for time with Jackson and Anyanwu.

Gusty Schwartzmeier, R-Fr., 6-4, 271 - Not only does he have one of the best names on the UB roster, but Schwartzmeier has an interesting combination of size and athleticism that will be used at both defensive end and perhaps defensive tackle throughout the season. He played with the second team during the spring game and showing great power in the run game. It should be noted that in high school he was the MVP of the NY Underclassmen Combine. Gusty will be competing for time along the defensive line and his athleticism will be a key in determining the amount of time that he sees.

Torey Hendrick, Jr., 6-2, 215 - One of the big surprises on National Signing Day that got plenty of attention was the addition of Hendrick, a 3-star JUCO transfer from ASA College. Hendrick had plenty of P-5 attention, at one point he was even committed to Iowa, but was unable to attend due to a credit paperwork SNAFU. But, what was Iowa's loss, is UB's gain. Hendrick is an explosive pass rusher that will likely see the field early as a pass rush specialist.

Chris Ford, So., 6-2, 318 - After appearing in nine games in a reserve role last season, Ford will look to become a bigger part of the defensive line rotation this season. Ford is a stout defender with the size to bully offensive linemen, especially in the run game. Look to see him in on early downs to support against the run, and if he shows off a pass rush ability then he will likely see more time on the field next to Brandon Crawford.

Jake Khoury, R-Fr., 6-2, 280 - Yet another redshirt freshman that will be competing for time along the defensive line; Khoury's size will likely allow him to swing between either defensive end or defensive tackle.

Zach Smekal, So., 6-3, 244 - Another defensive end prospect that will be competing for time in one of the two spots. Smekal was working with the second team recently, but suffered a knee injury and will be day-to-day.

Incoming Freshmen

Duke Hwang, Fr., 6-0, 280 - A speedy defensive tackle prospect making the short trek from Williamsville, Hwang is an intriguing prospect. Watching his game tape from high school you can see that Hwang is exceptionally fast for a man his size and he can give offensive linemen fits trying to contain him. Hwang may redshirt this coming season, but will be a factor in the coming years.

Christian Gonzalez, Fr., 6-2, 310 - A physically imposing presence, Gonzalez has the physical tools to contribute along the defensive line early in his career. Gonzalez has rotated in with the third team defense during the spring and may not take a redshirt to provide size and depth at the defensive tackle spot.

Justin Brandon, Fr., 6-0, 302 - Brandon comes to UB from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, Indiana where he was an exceptional defensive lineman on the #12 team in the country last year. Brandon brings a good combination of size, athleticism and strength and will be an intriguing prospect along the interior of the UB defensive line.

Charles Harris, Fr., 6-3, 240 - Harris comes to UB with the size and explosiveness required to contribute immediately. Harris displayed power, and speed of a Division I pass rusher in high school and he'll likely contribute as a defensive end as a true freshman if he can play like he did in high school. The most tantalizing attribute that Harris has is that he is as good as his is after only playing football for 3 years, so his ceiling is high. However, he has a long list of players in front of him that he will need to compete with for playing time.

Joe Tutela, Fr., 6-1, 275 - A walk on who will likely redshirt this season and will compete for time in the coming seasons.

The skill positions will be deep this season, lets take a look at the men who make that possible.

Outside of the running backs, the other skill positions on the offensive side of the ball, the wide receivers and the tight ends are among the deepest groups on the UB Football squad. Senior quarterback Joe Licata will benefit from returning several of his top receivers along with welcoming in several new faces that will look to contribute immediately. Outside of just pure depth, the number of guys that are capable of contributing give offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki extreme flexibility when game planning. He has the ability to put burners in at receiver to take the tops off of defenses, while having possession receivers capable of going across the middle and up the same, with stout guys that can contribute in the run game as well.

Looking across the roster as a whole I could make a case for just about any of the guys having playing time or even starting at some point throughout the season, the skill positions are that deep. The term "embarrassment of riches" comes to mind.

Projected Starters

These projected starters are under the assumption that Leipold will start 3 wide receivers and 1 tight end. I realize that the math may not add up when considering the other positions, but, he may change how many starters are at each position from game to game so please bear that in mind.

WR - Ron Willoughby, Sr., 6-4, 202 - After only registering 3 receptions in his sophomore season, Willoughby stepped up in a big way in the wake of the graduations of Alex Neutz and Fred Lee. The "Willoughbeast" as some have called him, was the team leader in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, with 50, 771 and 9, respectively. Willoughby was a reliable target all season long, showing a soft pair of hands and catching just about anything that was thrown his way. Willoughby has the size to go up in the air above defensive backs and the strength and speed to break away after the catch. Willoughby will once again be Joe Licata's top target, and look for his production to increase from last season to this season.

WR - Marcus McGill, Sr., 6-1, 227 - The former freshman long snapper will look to improve upon his previous season, with a presumed increase in playing time. McGill appeared in all 11 games last season (thanks Kent), but only started 4. Perhaps his most memorable moment from last season was dropping the 1st quarter game-tying pass against Baylor in front of a packed UB Stadium. His most significant game came against Army, racking up 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns. One of which was a WR screen late in the game that he took 65 yards to the house. McGill will need a strong showing at camp and in the early season. He is considerably bulkier than all of the other receivers, however, I could see him losing reps to other options if the production is not there early on.

WR - Jacob Martinez, R-So., 6-0, 187 - Hailing from the panhandle of Florida, Jacob Martinez thrust himself into the UB receiving core in a big way, having a completion in all 11 games. Used primarily as a slot receiver for short, underneath routes, Martinez finished the season with 280 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Perhaps his biggest strength lies in his agility, and his ability to get off of the line very quickly. Martinez beat defenders by running quick, simple routes ran efficiently. With the graduation of Devon Hughes, who played a similar role to Martinez, expect his production to increase.

TE - Matt Weiser, Sr., 6-5, 245 - Weiser is a bulky yet athletic tight end who finished the season last year with 15 catches for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns. The most memorable being the Jordan Johnson fake run-pass against Akron which cracked the Sportscenter Top Ten. Weiser and Licata have been roommates in the past, so there is definitely no chemistry lacking in the combination. Although it is hard to say this early on, I would expect Weiser to play a similar role in comparison to last year.

Backups

WR - Malcolm Robinson, R-Jr., 6-1, 197 - Just one of the Bulls to make the Sportscenter Top Ten last season with an acrobatic leaping touchdown catch, Robinson does not lack athleticism. Looking at 2015, Robinson will see more playing time and most recently he has been working with the first team in training camp, and may break into the starting lineup sooner rather than later.

WR - Jamarl Eiland, R-So., 5-10, 198 - We haven't seen all that much from Mr. Eiland. But to be fair, he hasn't had all that much opportunity. He had only 2 receptions last year totaling 59 yards. Quinn even had him return some punts during the early season. With the return of Devin Campbell and the stacked RB core, I would assume Campbell will assume this role again in 2015. Eiland will need a strong showing in camp with all of the receiving competition.

WR - Collin Lisa, So., 5-10, 180 - The man with two first names. A UAB transfer (along with defensive back, Jordan Collier), Lisa is very comparable to the style of Jacob Martinez. Aside from his time at UWW and the spring game, we have not seen Leipold's plan for UB's offense. Is there room for Lisa and Martinez on the field at the same time? My favorite part of Lisa's game is his ability to catch in traffic.

WR - Mikel DeMonte, Sr., 5-10, 170 - Mikel is a walk-on addition for the Bulls, primarily adding depth. He did not see the field at all last season, and his time will most likely be very limited in 2015. Jon Fuller did tweet earlier in the week that he had a "pair of highlight reel catches." Delmonte also had a touchdown in the spring game.

WR - JR Zazzara, R-So., 6-2, 191 - Once recruited as a quarterback, Zazzara has recently transitioned to WR. Interesting note: JR was offered a scholarship to Syracuse to play lacrosse, but turned it down to play Division I Football. Jon Fuller also noted that Zazzara has been a WR standout in the early stages of camp, which could earn him reps during the regular season.

TE - Mason Schreck, Jr., 6-4, 244 - Schreck played quarterback in high school and made the transition to Tight End when he arrived at UB. He did not have earth shattering numbers last year, finishing with just 10 catches and 108 yards. I would consider Schreck more of a blocking Tight End and it will be interesting to see if he is used more in that regard. Presumably, these two will be the only to see playing time this year.

TE - Kevin Rogers, R-Fr.., 6-3, 230 - Like Mason Schreck, Rogers played quarterback in high school and has made the transition to tight end. After redshirting in his first season at UB, Rogers will look to compete in a backup role behind Weiser and Schreck.

TE - Kyle Nagel, So., 6-1, 208 - A former walk-on who is a tad undersized for a tight end, but is a perfect size for an H-Back type role. Nagel may see time in short yardage situations and on special teams.

* Let's all take a moment of silence for Tchaikovsky Cantalicio, who is no longer on the UB roster. Now the best name is a toss up between Kyril Threats and Dwellie Striggles.

Incoming Freshmen

WR - KJ Osborn, Fr., 5-11, 197 - Osborn attended IMG Academy in Florida and comes to UB off a nice senior year totaling 379 receiving yards along with 7 touchdowns. I would expect him to not see any playing time this year, if he does not redshirt.

WR - Brandon Smiley, Fr., 6-1, 195 - Joining Jordan Johnson (+1 for alliteration), Brandon Smiley will be playing right down the street from his alma mater of Sweet Home. He holds the school records for receiving touchdowns (18), career receiving yards (1,148), and career catches (68). Smiley played defensive back in high school as well, demonstrating his athleticism and quickness. Smiley has displayed good hands through camp thus far, and could add even more depth if necessary.

WR - Deion Barnes, Fr., 6-1, 175 - Last but certainly not least, Barnes comes to UB from Tottenville High in Staten Island, NY. There isn't too much information available aside from his highlight videos. The biggest takeaway from my perspective is his ability to find seams in the defense and exploit them. It will be interesting to see him develop.

TE - Tyler Mabry, Fr., 6-2 244 - Mabry comes to UB from Ypsilanti, Michigan, by way of the IMG Academy where he was a teammate of fellow recruit KJ Osborn. Mabry is a big-bodied bruiser of a tight end who will likely be a blocking tight end first, contributing big time in the Bulls' running game. He may redshirt this season, but next season will be his chance to break into the lineup.

TE - Matt Seybert, Fr., 6-3, 222 - Seybert is an intriguing prospect, because he did not play during his senior year of high school due to injury, and the Bulls were able to swoop in and lock up his commitment early. After looking at his game tape from his junior year, Seybert shows everything you want in a tight end: he can catch the ball well, he's a mauler as a blocker in the run game, and he's a high character guy. He may redshirt to make sure that he's completely healed from his injuries and to bulk up, but, he has the makings to be a real steal in Lance Leipold's first recruiting class.

While most of the attention of the past day fell on UB's long snapper it was the whole team who took to the field for the fourth day today.

The focus through the first few days has been on Joe Licata, the record setting Buffalo quarterback who is going into this year after having hip surgery in the off season. But there are two units on defense which are needed as much as Jobi-Wan.

The Defensive Line is going from three players to four and they took some of the bigger linebackers to fill the gaps in our depth chart.

Meanwhile the DB's were torched last season had some of their harder hitters absorbed into the depleted linebackers. This leaves us with a new look defense with some smaller linebackers.

Licata and the offense should be able to do some damage but will the defense hold up their end of the bargain?

Well today they looked up to the task.

An aggressive defense forced some mistakes and it led to mistakes. Andrews Dadeboe jumped a short Licata pass for a pick six. Also troubling UB quarterbacks were Diamond Williams, who had a pickoff in 7-on-7 work and Ryan Williamson who picked off a Licata pass early on in team drills.

The News noted that the defense is playing perhaps a bit more aggressively in summer camp than the offense saw under Jeff Quinn.

UB football practice report: Day Four - Campus Watch
This was the second day of practice in shoulder pads (no padded pants), and we’re seeing more active fronts from the defense, with more blitzes thrown in. UB coach Lance Leipold said his coaches will try to throw a lot of looks at the offense early. They don’t spoon-feed the offense on pressures.

"We throw a lot on each other right away," Leipold said. "We just feel that’s the way you learn and adapt. There’s not a lot of movement in the first few practices. But now they’re starting to bring it with the pads on. In the first couple practices without pads, you’d start getting bodies moving and shifting and running into each other. We’re more of a whole-part-whole philosophy. We’re going to throw a lot at them and then bring it back and evaluate. See what sticks and teach it over again."
