The presumably brief Alex Wood era kicked off today with a tight 20-14 loss to to Central Michigan. The UB defense showed up this week but the offense, particularly the running game, was wholly ineffective against the Chippewas. Anthone Taylor who had piled up more than 650 yards in his last four games was held to 25 yards on 14 carries.

Lee Skinner had a career-high 16 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Adam Redden had 10 tackles, 3.5 for loss and two of the Bulls' season-high five sacks on the day. Witney Sherry had a career-high 15 tackles and an interception for the Bulls.

"Obviously it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to, I thought our kids played hard tonight. They played with energy. They played with excitement. Unfortunately, they rendered us to be one dimensional offensively and when that happens, it's tough to win. We've got to fix that, obviously, and we will and get ready for our next ball game. We still have a great deal to play for." - Interim head coach Alex Wood

Central Michigan seized control of the game early and jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of Saylor Lavallii touchdown runs.

Lavallii came in for Thomas Rawls who suffered an early knee injury which turned out to be season ending,

The Chippewas were driving deep into UB territory late in the first half looking to add to its lead, when senior safety Adam Redden came up with a play that changed the feel of the game. Redden came up with a strip sack of the Central Michigan quarterback and recovered the fumble himself.

Redden and the defense seemed to be more focused on stripping the ball. The turnover led to a 67 yard drive and Joe Licata found Ron Willoughby on a 28-yard touchdown pass to cut the CMU lead to 14-7 at the half. Buffalo had one more drive in the second quarter, getting to the ten yard line but time expired.

UB's momentum continued in the second half as Devin Campbell returned the opening kickoff Central Michigan 23-yard line. Three plays later, Malcolm Robinson made a phenomenal catch on a Licata pass in the end zone to tie the game at 14.

After that score UB's offense stalled and the game would stay knotted at 14 until Central Michigan mounted an a 98-yard touchdown drive that took nine and half minutes off the clock. The seven-yard touchdown pass gave the Chips the lead for good, 20-14, with 8:08 remaining in the game.

The pregame meal hydrates, nutritionates and prepares you for the upcoming game. Remove the stone of Quinn! Woo hoo! Attach the stone of rebuild! Doh!

Pregame Song: "Goin Up" IAMSU!

Hopefully UB is going up as a result of the coaching change...

Fire Chips > Fire Up Chips

Pregame Drink: Water (and White Bread)

The pregame drink is the classic palate cleanser, white bread and water. The Alex Wood era begins and although he will probably not be the future head coach of the UB Bulls, he could serve as a nice palate cleanser between the Quinn era and the next era.

Eight Factors for Game Eight

The UB Offense vs the CMU Defense

Buffalo is #3 in the MAC in yards per play and points per game, CMU is #2 in yards per play allowed and points allowed per game. This is the unstoppable object vs. the immovable force.

UB is #2 in the MAC in yards per attempt passing, and 5th in the MAC In yards per rushing attempt, while CMU is 1st in yards per passing attempt allowed and 5th in rushing yards per carry allowed. You can't write it any clearer, that this will be strength vs strength.

HOWEVER,

In CMU's wins their opponents have run 30 times for 3.6 yards per carry.

In Buffalo wins, they have run 47 times for 4.34 yards per carry.

In CMU losses their opponents have run 40 times for 4.5 yards per carry.

In Buffalo losses they have run 38 times for 4.5 yards per carry.

A) In Buffalo's wins they've run the ball better, but ran 9 fewer times #Quinnball.

B) Buffalo should look to run 10-15 times a quarter to wear down the CMU defense.

The UB Defense vs the CMU Offense

Weakness vs Weakness here, CMU is 9th in scoring, 10th in yard per play and 8th in yards per rush. Meanwhile UB is 10th in scoring defense, 13th in yard per play and 8th yard per rush. If you will the movable object versus the unstartable force.

HOWEVER,

Lucky us, CMU is 3rd in yards per attempt, and UB of course is 13th in yard per attempt. CMU is averaging 8 yards per attempt, and UB is sacrificing 9.2 yards per attempt. Which is ridiculous, if you got the ball on your own 8, you'd score in 10 plays on average as long as you never ran the ball.

Will the secondary be better with Tepper and Wood than it was with Tepper and Quinn? If not, CMU will have a field day.

Senior Day, brought to you by MACtion is everything wrong with college football

I get MACtion, but lets not pretend it's not a terrible money grab. People say the MAC needs exposure, but would the MAC be playing on weeknights if they weren't getting paid for it? If no, then it's about money. Ironic as the UNC academic scandal drops, and people start to pretend they care about academics, while avoiding the real issue, student athletes have it hard enough without midweek action tearing through their schedule. I know every other sport deals with midweek games, but I think football is unique, the number of athletes, the race (no racist?) of the participants, and the higher performance pressure on football athletes make midweek games more damaging.

On top of that who really likes these games? Take away the leisurely tailgate, and replace it with a race from work to the stadium on a Tuesday night. Replace a 50 degree Saturday afternoon with a 20 degree Wednesday night. You live in the Central, Mountain, West or god forbid the Aleutian-Hawaiian zone, your bad, no football for you, you're still at work.

Turns out the players don't particularly like playing their senior game in front of a couple thousand people on a random Thursday night, and voted to move senior day to late October. So enjoy the final Saturday of UB football, and remember no one enjoys this arrangement except the people making money to inconvenience everyone minus gambling degenerates in Vegas.

UB has 21 Seniors, including 5 DBs, 4 DLs and 4 OLs and they are 3 wins away from being the winningest class in UB's FBS history.

Special Teams

CMU is kicking 62% field goals, Buffalo 50%. With Rain and 20 mph winds in the forecast, whatever team decides to just go for it instead of attempting the field goal will probably win.

X-Factors

Thomas "You're going to miss his running" Rawls, paid his debt to society and now he wants revenge! He is the MAC's leading rusher despite only playing six games. In his last 4, he has 129 carries for 731 yards and 7 TDs.

Anthone "Anth1" Taylor is also doing well, third in the MAC in rushing yards. His last four games: 124 carries for 685 yards and 6 TDs.

Whoever has the better running day will probably win the game, although both backs' teams have been 2-2 in their last 4 despite Herculean efforts by their RBs.

Going Streaking

CMU has a 3 game winning streak against Buffalo and a 2 game winning streak at UB stadium. UB last defeated CMU in 2004, a 36-6 UB win over first year coach Brian Kelly and first year OC Jeff Quinn.

Buffalo is 10-1 in their last 11 games at UB Stadium and during that time they have defeated both Eastern and Western Michigan at UB Stadium. A win today will give UB the home Directional Slam.

Situation of the game

Cooper Rush has surrendered 5 Sack Fumbles this year and Thomas Rawls has fumbled 3 times. UB will need to get Brandon Crawford rushing Cooper Rush around the end, and Adam Redden hacking at the ball whenever Thomas Rawls carries the ball.

Game Score brought to you by Science

CMU beat BSU (32-29 loss), Ohio (28-10 win) and NIU (34-17 win) by an average score of 30.3 - 19.67.

BSU vs Army (Army 33-24), Ohio vs BGSU (BGSU 31-13) and NIU vs Miami (NIU 51-41) puts UB on average 5.33 points better than the average of BSU, Ohio and NIU.

Add UB's 7 point superior defense to the BSU Ohio NIU (BON) average you get 26.66 points.

Subtract 1.6 ponts for defense inferior to the BON average you get 32 points.

Thus the score will be CMU 32, Buffalo 27.

A new era, a new Bruwpeg Champion, yours truly.

A career night from Javon McCrea helped the Bulls to a strong road win in Mount Pleasant, as the senior forward's 25 points and 20 boards overwhelmed CMU. Trust me, it wasn't nearly as close as the 79 - 70 final.

A 39-36 first half lead ballooned to as much as 18 as UB coasted to a 79-70 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas on Saturday night.

But the story of the game was Javon McCrea really showing off his stuff. I'll spoil it for you now: 25 points and 20 rebounds for the Kraken. The last time a Bull went 20/20? Yassin Idbihi in my fondest UB memory: the famous "no socks" game against Bowling Green in Idbihi's senior season.

First Half

Speed Racer - Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the opening minutes tonight was the pace, as UB headed into the first media time out with an 8-6 lead on the strength of 8 points in the paint - 6 from Javon McCrea and 2 from Will Regan. It seemed for the first half dozen possessions that every time UB got the ball Jarod Oldham was streaking up the floor, and the senior guard had two early assists to help the big men out.

On the flip side, Central Michigan used a press early in the first half to take an 11-8 lead shortly after the under-16 and UB's fortunes in the back and forth first half seemed to swing with their ability to combat the press, as CMU used two separate 8-0 runs to push the Bulls.

Three Point Defense - UB came into the game tops in the MAC and up there nationally in three-point defense, holding opponents to under 30% from outside the arc. Tonight would see a strength vs strength matchup when the Chippewas had the ball. CMU's first 6 points came on 2-3 shooting from distance.

Attacking CMUs D, Skeete and Shannon Evans combined to hit three consecutive triples to open up a 19-13 lead midway through. At the half CMU was 4-12 and UB 5-12 on three-point shots.

Many Happy Returns - Jarryn Skeete returned today from a knee injury. His first shot was a three to tie the game shortly before the under 12. Auraum Nuiriankh also returned from injury, providing some additional bench minutes to a team that has won and lost with the performance of the backcourt subs this season. While neither guard made a huge difference in his return, it was good to see them both healthy.

This One Goes to Eleven / Krakenwatch - UB's success in the first half was driven by a two-headed monster comprised of a dynamic freshman and all-time UB great in his senior season.

Shannon Evans blew past his season average of 8 points off the bench with a quick 11 on the strength of three long distance shots. I have been conflicted about the freshman so far this year, as he gets into the lane more frequently than any Bull since Rodney Pierce, but will also miss a lot of shots from the field. That wasn't an issue in the first half, as Evans scored 11 of UB's first 24 providing a big spark off the bench.

The other beast of burden for UB proved to be - who else - Javon McCrea, who was ALL UP IN CMU's GRILL early on, to the tune of 16 points and 5 boards at the final media time out.

Free Throws. - The most infuriating aspect of this team is ridiculous disparities from the free throw line. CMU made it to the bonus with over 6 minutes left in the half, while UB had not yet attempted a shot. Despite all the praises I've been singing, this continued to be a tight game at the half, in part because of CMU's 8 - 2 advantage in free points from the line.

Adventures in Pep Band - A bad, bad version of "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis from the CMU contingent. Basket Case is still the leader for this season. CMU just has too much drum and not enough brass to put out a solid product. Over the halftime break, they played a rendition of "Mirrors" by JT, and it took me most of the song to even figure out what it was.

Top Performers at the Half - Javon McCrea 16p, 7rb, 1blk, Shannon Evans 15pts

Both teams shot over 50% from the floor in the first half, and combined for just 8 turnovers. Unlike other close road games for the Bulls, this wasn't a case of UB playing down, but rather the Chips playing a solid game of basketball themselves.

Second Half

Fouls. - Three straight on UB to open the half. Rather annoying. The normally fair and even-keeled Josh Whetzel was, fair and even-keeled, as really, things seemed to go against UB more than they should have. At one point Evans got run over chasing a loose ball, and then a minute later was called for an offensive foul. At the first media time out, the foul disparity was 4-1 in CMU's favor, but it felt worse.

Bodozer, Basketball Style - Kind of the opposite of the quick start and great offensive numbers of the first half, as CMU couldn't make use of strong offensive rebounding and opened the half 1-8 from the floor. UB doesn't really take advantage but slowly opens up a 48-39 lead - their biggest of the night, before going into the under 12 with a 48-42 lead.

Similar to the football Bulls' MO during the fall, as the second half went on, the offense would step up while the defense continued to hold serve, however, in the middle of the half. Javon McCrea attracted four defenders, only to pass it away and then have the putback rebound all to himself, and then Will Regan his a triple. A McCrea block and Freelove dunk capped off the seven point burst and the 58-44 lead forced a Chippewas timeout.

#releasethekraken - There wasn't much to talk about for much of the second half other than Javon McCrea's numbers, as the forward grabbed a career-high 17th rebound with four minutes to play, and continued to pour in the points. Shockingly enough, his 25th was his first from the line as #12 enjoyed one of his best-ever night from the floor.

Late Game against a lesser team on the road - We've seen this before. Even an 11 point lead with 3 minutes to go didn't feel safe, as CMU got within nine with under two to play. Strong passing to break the press, solid dribbling from Oldham to run down the clock before inevitable fouls and the whole team executing their shots kept the Chippewas out of reach as time ran down.

Javon McCrea finished with 25 points and 20 rebounds. He is now just 82 points from Rasaun Young's career scoring mark, 174 from the hallowed 2K threshold, and 95 rebounds from 1000.

Evans didn't replicate his amazing first half, but did finish with 19 points. Jarod Oldham scored 11 second half points to fill up the stat sheet.

UB next plays Miami on Wednesday night. The Redhawks put a scare into the Ohio Bobcats earlier this afternoon before falling in the Convo.
