Bull Run - NCAA Football: Buffalo Bulls vs UMass Minutemen 2013Where Buffalo Fans Hang Outhttps://cdn.vox-cdn.com/community_logos/48083/bullrun-fave.png2013-10-19T20:05:46-04:00http://www.ubbullrun.com/rss/stream/46037132013-10-19T20:05:46-04:002013-10-19T20:05:46-04:00New York 32, Massachusetts 3

Last year, UB riding the momentum of wins, UB fell 13-0 before outscoring the Minutemen 29-6 in the second half to secure a 29-19 win. This year UB outscored UMass 19-0 in the second half, but the game was in hand 20 minutes into the game, when Khalil Mack took his second interception of the year back for a touchdown.

The stormy weather was perfect for Brandon Oliver who became UB's all-time and finished with 41 carries for 216 yards and a touchdown. Licata had an efficient Licata day, 66.6% completion, 167 yards and 1 touchdown pass. The offense however struggled to get going, only scoring 3 field goals in the first 3 quarters.

The defense was strong yet again. The UB shutout streak ended at 91 minutes 22 seconds when UMass' kicker squeaked one over the crossbar late in the first half. That said, UB has not trailed in a game since going down 23-20 to Stony Brook after their triple overtime possession. In UB's 5 wins, they have never trailed in regulation.

This week the defense played double duty, scoring 9 points, including a Khalil Mack pick-6. Buffalo's defense recorded 3 more takeaways, the Mack interception and 2 more fumbles recovered, and they added 3 sacks to their already gaudy sack numbers on the year.

UB's focus now turns to the difficult part of the season. UB's four FBS victories came over opponents who are a combined 2-26. UB's next three opponents are a combined 11-11. In addition, UB suffered injures to Jasen Carlson, Alex Neutz and Colby Way, that may alter UB's season depending on the severity of those injuries.

The Bulls next travel down the 90 to Kent to take on the 2-6 Kent State Golden Flashes who are coming home after a 38-21 loss to South Alabama.

I'm 99% sure UB will win, it's just a question of will they win it the hard way, or the easy way?

Let's start with a few Twitter questions:

When the entire UMass football team parades past me đ
— Marie Noga (@marie_oliviaa) October 18, 2013

I assume the question is "What should I do when the entire UMass football team parades past me?"

A: GET OUT OF THE WAY...because we wouldn't want you hurting a Minuteman...as we learned last year, the Minutemen are especially susceptible to being pushed backwards by people standing directly in front of them going straight ahead.

Just part of the learning process in the transition from FCS to FBS. In 2014 expect UMass to learn how to move around objects and in 2015 the ability to push back at things coming directly at them should develop.

UMass Football "All In" pre-roll ads are annoying, sad
— Ratty (@HeyRatty) October 18, 2013

A: They are sad...why are they emphasizing MASS? Aren't they proud to be Amherst? It's a slap in the face to all Amherstonians. All in? More like All Out...they can't wait to move the whole University to Foxborough and connect it to Boston via high speed rail paid for by our hard earned debt ceiling money!

Wait, Umass won the football game last week? Dream big Minutemen...
— Hillary Lynch (@hillarylynch) October 18, 2013

A: Yes UMass won, but no UMass should not dream big...last week's win was more of a nightmare in Miami's inception than a UMass dream. Once Miami goes dream in a dream in a dream, they can go from worst to first and win the MAC Championship out of nowhere again #TheSeasonThatShouldNotBeNamed

That is $3,430 in illegal benefits earned for just last week's effort. I for one think UMass should do the right thing and sit the young tight end until the NCAA can figure this one out.

Advantage: New York

If UMass does play Rob Blanchflower, the X-Factor matchup will be Blanchflower vs. Redden.

Blanchflower missed the first 3 games of the year and then caught 10 balls for 58 yards against good opponents Vandy and Bowling Green. Last week Blanchflower exploded for 5 catches 98 yards and a touchdown. Despite missing 3 games, he is already 2nd in the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Last year, Blanchflower caught 4 balls for 44 yards and a score to help propel UMass to an early lead 13-0 lead.

Since then a hack was installed into the Tepper defense, Adam Redden. Instead of awkwardly dropping a linebacker to play his flex-coverage role, Tepper taught a safety to play linebacker. The results have been spectacular:

37 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, 3 Sacks, a QB hurry a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

In the meantime, UB has only allowed 14 receptions for 142 yards and 0 TDs to Tight Ends this year.

Advantage: Push - Blanchflower is a NFL ready target hard to eliminate him totally, but UMass doesn't have enough depth to match up to UB's strong defense.

UMass has been solid in the secondary allowing 204 yards per game and snatching 7 interceptions. They have been damaged against the run, surrendering 247 yards per game, 6 yards per carry and 11 rushing touchdowns.

Last year UB's #4 RB and a fullback ran a combined 33 times for 163 yards (4.8 ypc). UB's offense should excel with a fully operational backfield. UB can duplicate their gameplan from WMU, staying true to the run game and making the opponent pay when they leave the wideouts isolated one-on-one.

UMass is scoring 9 points a game. Their strength is the running game, averaging 3.56 yards per carry and 116 yards per game. The passing game looks like UB's might if they didn't have Neutz. Getting Blanchflower back helps immensely.

UB has allowed 36 points in regulation in their last 4 games. The UMass offense may be the worst of the group, UB's defense should dominate.

It's a good thing that I decided to dig into it because we have two new names to watch this week. Colby Way and Joe Licata are now listed in the schools top ten career marks.

Licata threw his 18th touchdown last week. That ties him with Zach Maynard for 10th all time.

He may pass Jim Rodriguez this week if he has a two touchdown week, if would take a massive blowout for him to surpass Key Hyeyer.

If his pace holds out for the final six games Licata should end the season ranked just ahead of Frank Reilly at #6.

Licata is on pace to set several single season marks. The Single season books for yards, attempts, completions, and touchdowns may all have Licata's name in them by the time this season is over.

And the kid is just half way through his sophomore year!

If Buffalo manages to find anyone to replace Neutz it's fair to say most of Drew Willy's career marks are fair game for the Western New York prep legend.

Colby Way quietly climbed into the record books with his three sack showing last week. Well it was quiet to everyone but Western Michigan's Quarterback.

He and Mack are both climbing this season with Khalil Mack just one sack away from tying Rich Dadabo and Vince Canosas the all time UB leader.

Colby Way is a half sack behind Hardy Mitchell and a full sack behind Keith Hansen.

There is enough season left for him to maybe catch Tampa Bay Buccaneer defenders Steven Means and Trevor Scott.

It would be a big accomplishment for a guy who Phil Steele left off his all MAC mid season team.

And speaking of Khalil Mack...

The Standout Buffalo Linebacker has not been left off anyone's list. Chasing down two NCAA records has that effect on someone's reputation.

The most likely movent this week will be in the Tackle for loss category where a good game could move Khalil into third all time ahead of Terrell Suggs.

Jason Babin is still within shooting range but unless Mack has a career day during the last half of the season eleven tackles for loss might be too much to expect.

With six games left Mack is tied with former Mid-Shipman Jabaree Tuani at 8th all time.

But despite being 8th on the list he is only two fumbles away from being tied for first and then one more from setting the record.

A big hit hear, smart strip there and the Buffalo Senior will surpass names like Terrell Suggs.

Some teams on UB's schedule have proven to be very susceptible to fumbles.

Ohio, for example, has given up six fumbles this season. Kent has lost five fumbles.

UMass, Miami, Toledo, and Bowling Green are all rather stingy. Giving up as most a half fumble per game.

On defense there is one more player moving up in the UB books.

Johnson may catch Domonic Cook this week and it's not unreasonable to think that Mark Graham's mark might also fall.

Johnson has five pass break ups and three interceptions.

On of those interceptions was returned 33 yards for a touchdown.

Oliver is almost certain to pass Bell, and likely to pass Anthony Swan. The minute men are giving up more than 200 yards rushing per game so the all time record set by current Green Bap Packers running back James Starks is also in danger.

During this past weeks Last Bull In Conrad predicted a heavy does of running and perhaps Oliver would break the record before the half.

If Oliver rushes for 153 yards how many carries will it take?

Bo is 20 carries away from catching Alan Bell. If he ran 20 times for 153 yards that would be a YPC of more than seven and a half yards, well above the Seniors Career average.

Finally Bo is one touchdown away from catching O.D. Underwood for fifth all time among UB Backs. It's hard to see Oliver catch Anthony Swan and Lee Jones this year let alone James Starks. Lee and Jones are up seven and Starks is currently 12 touchdowns ahead of Bo.

Can Buffalo make it five wins in a row Saturday afternoon against Massachusetts?

This might be the easiest game preview that I'm privileged to write all season.

For as easy as the last three games have been for the Buffalo Bulls, this game might take the cake.

After outscoring their opponents 116-26 the past three weeks, Buffalo returns home to take on a Minutemen team that has only scored 52 points all season (8.7 ppg).

Massachusetts canât score and has the worst offense in all of college football at the present moment.

Put that up against a Bulls defense coming off their first road shutout since 1965 this past weekend and you have a match-up that looks ugly on paper.

Football however isnât played on paper. Thatâs why they play the games.

Quarterback A.J. Doyle leads Massachusettsâs historically poor offense. The sophomore quarterback is 76 of 135 on the year for 689 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Doyle is coming off a solid game against Miami (Ohio), a 17-10 win for Massachusetts in which he went 19 of 35 for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

His go-to guy is sophomore Tajae Sharpe. The New Jersey native has 35 receptions for 331 yards and three touchdowns in six games this year.

Running the ball, the Minutemen go with a rotation. Stacey Bedell gets the most carries of anyone in the rotation, carrying the ball 73 times for 248 yards and a touchdown.

Massachusetts struggles to run, averaging only 3.6 yards per carry on 196 attempts on the year.

It honestly shouldn't be much of a challenge for Buffalo to contain the Minutemen offense.

The Bulls defense is much more talented that the Massachusetts offense and should be able to easily hold them to less than 14 points (I'm being conservative here).

Defensively, the Minutemen arenât horrible but they certainly arenât good. Theyâre much better than their offensive counterparts, ranking in the top 80 in the county in points allowed per game (28.0).

In two MAC contests, Massachusetts has only allowed 19 points per game. Still, they shouldn't be much of a challenge for Branden Oliver and company.

Look for Buffalo to run the ball down Massachusetts throat Saturday afternoon, as they should have a dominant day on both sides of the ball.

This game shouldn't be close.

A look into the UMass beat a day in advance of some hot Minuteman action.

I make a point out of not visiting other teams' message boards during games. The last time I did that was Columbus Day weekend of 2008, when the Bulls were playing Western Michigan, blew a multiple touchdown lead and lost in OT when the Bronco secondary hauled in a tipped Drew Willy pass. Bad juju to say the least.

That said, it's always useful to check up on what the other side is saying. Thanks to Jimmy Kelley over at Hustle Belt, we've already heard a bit from the UMass fan perspective, both in this week's Last Bull In webcast and in Get to Know Your Foe from a few days ago. In Behind Enemy Lines, we're going to take a look at the media buzz surrounding our next opponent.

Football Heads To Buffalo To Run With The Bulls - University of Massachusetts Official Athletic Site

After picking up its first win of the 2013 season last Saturday at Gillette Stadium against Miami (Ohio), the UMass football team heads back out on the road this weekend to take on Buffalo at UB Stadium. For UMass, the game against the Bulls is one of the few series against MAC opponents that pre-dates the Minutemen's move to the FBS level. The Minutemen and Bulls will meet for the 11th time on Saturday in a series that dates back to 1964.

We start with UMass' own rundown of the Battle of Amherst. UMass does a good job with their game day hub, which has all the usual standards (Game Notes, link to the weekly coaches' teleconference, broadcast info, etc.), but also an embedded ESPN3 player for the game. I don't expect any UB fans to watch the game through UMass' site, but it's nice to see a clean and detailed setup.

Charley Molnar Quotes From Weekly MAC Media Teleconference (Oct. 14) - University of Massachusetts Official Athletic Site

Molnar On What He Took From Playing Buffalo Last Year: "First, our team has more experience now than it did a year ago. We were new at `that winning thing' after last year after Akron."

Charley Molnar, happily, is not PJ Fleck. He knows UMass isn't going to be a world beater every game. That said, maybe I wouldn't talk about being unfamiliar and new to "that winning thing." End result, though, is Coach Molnar feels the Minutemen are better prepared for the Bulls this year, especially with the departure of bruiser Rashad Jean.

I may have added that last part.

Of course, you can't get too far into any discussion about Jeff Quinn's team without highlighting #MACKtion. Coach Molnar weighs in the student paper preview of the game:

The Daily Collegian: UMass football puts win behind to focus on Buffalo

"You have to pick and choose how you handle Khalil," Molnar said. "If we think weâre gonna put one blocker on him weâll be sorry at the end of the day, so weâll have to use some creative methods to try to neutralize Khalil Mack."

Maroon Musket, the foremost University of Massachusetts Amherst blog in this fine country, puts it a little more bluntly:

Opponent Spotlight: Buffalo

Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch puts up impressive numbers, but Mack is the best player in the conference.

Well how about that.

Maroon Musket also keys in on the Minutemen offensive line, and, well. Let's just say if Miami had their way at times, then it could get ugly against the Buffalo front seven even with Blake Bean and Nick Gilbo out.

It's on U: Offensive Line

The main concern is whether UMass' play calling will be its own worst enemy. The offensive line, which until last Saturday led the MAC in sacks allowed, had trouble blocking the read option against Miami (OH). The Redhawks ran wild in the backfield and frequently gobbled up UMass running backs or quarterback AJ Doyle. UMass has been pretty solid at zone blocking all season, but with a hobbled quarterback and rookie running backs, the correct reads weren't made with any level of confidence. Doyle held onto the ball too long, Wilson or Stacey Bedell chose the wrong hole, or, quite simply, Miami's defensive ends sniffed out the play. Against Buffalo, things will only get worse. The Bulls lead the conference in sacks (21), and Mack is No. 2 out of all players with six of his own. If the Minutemen try to parade a gimpy Doyle out there and make him run the read option, he can expect a face full of Buffalo turf.

UMass has some skill, though. Seven former Minutemen made 53-man NFL rosters at the start of this season, which is Victor Cruz and then six other guys. Homegrown tight end Rob Blanchflower looks to be the next Minuteman on the big stage.

Leominster's Blanchflower on watch list for college tight end award - Sentinel & Enterprise

AMHERST -- It has been a memorable week for University of Massachusetts tight end Rob Blanchflower. The Leominster native caught the game-winning touchdown in UMass' first win of the season on Saturday, then followed that up by earning a spot on the John Mackey Award Mid-Season Watch List, announced Tuesday, which recognizes the most outstanding tight end in the country.

But - and this is my big question - how will the UMass offensive attack create time for Blanchflower to get open while also not having him back to add blocking help?

The Bulls lost their first two games to Ohio State and Baylor but have been rolling ever since, most recently in last Saturdayâs 33-0 win at Western Michigan. They pressure the quarterback with a ferocious rush led by an even more prominent NFL prospect, sack-machine linebacker Khalil Mack. That presents a particular challenge to Blanchflower, whoâll be asked to get open quickly when heâs not staying in to help with pass protection. "If we think weâre going to put one blocker on Khalil, weâll be sorry at the end of the day," said Molnar. "So weâll have to use Blanch in some creative ways to try to neutralize the rush."

No matter where you turn in pregame chatter this year, it comes back to Khalil Mack.

You can expect to see future editions of Behind Enemy Lines the day before Football games. During basketball season, look for a shorter version of it the night before or morning of the matchup.
