Well a flurry of last week commitments bumped UB from nine recruits to 18, a decent number which should lift the Bulls out of last place if Rivals ever updates their site (still have Tim McVey and are missing a huge number of UB's actual verbals, even the ones scouted by Rivals.

It was a very north centered class. Two from Florida, two from Georgia, one from Kansas and one from Missouri. The rest were New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and Michigan. I'm not as Florida minded as many who follow recruiting. Sure there is a ton of talent but there are also seven FBS schools in the state, Texas has a dozen.

In terms of positions is was all about Offensive skill and the defensive front seven. Some good looking defensive backs and a couple of offensive linemen but of the 18 player picked up a half were from the defensive front seven and five were receivers or offensive backs.

If Quinn can find Talent in the Mid Atlantic and Great Lakes regions the pool of talent versus the number of fishermen is pretty much the same.

Many of these guys have no other listed FBS offers that is, to say the least, a bit troubling. Then again nobody wsa beating down the door for a piece of James Stark or Naaman Roosevelt. There are a lot of All State players, a lot of player who made their states All Star games, and several who played on teams that were very highly ranked in their state.

At the end of the day I have no reason to be overly excited or pessimistic about the guys coming in, just like I would not have been pumped for Roosevelt if I have been following UB football in 2005-2006.

Jeff Quinn's first full recruiting class, picked up in the 2010-2011 season, is just now going to be the guys who carry this team. So we will find out if Quinn and his staff know how to mine hidden games or if UB is just not getting the players that will advance this program.

The Name that will, but should not, mess with MAC broadcasters: Andrews Dadeboe, it sounds just like it looks but count on some hapless MAC announcer to screw it up in the early years of his Buffalo career.

The player most in demand: Was sitting on offers from Ball State (MAC), Florida Atlantic (SBC), Florida International (CUSA), and Troy (SBC). Side note... This defensive lineman is also an accomplished swimmer (50 yard sprint)

The Media Mogul: James Coleman has been named four times as the New York Post player of the week, the post was also all over his verbal to Buffalo this summer.

Best Story Line: Without a doubt it's Chris Ford who was not denied his scholarship offer despite a nasty cheap shot during summer combines which ended his senior season before is started.

Inception Award: Blake Bean who will be on a defense coached by a man who also coached his father!

Anger Management Needs: Jarrett Franklin who piled up a monstrous 21 sacks during his senior year.

Blue Tinted Glasses: Loved the dorms at UB. Either he was nowhere near governors or the place has chanced in the last dozen years.

Pick a seat and sit in it: Houston Glass played pretty much everything he could and Coach Quinn indicated that while he may end up in a receiver role he will have other uses. I suspect that means returner or the future "Alley Cat" offense.

Buffalo is pulling in some late verbals and sticking by some early offers.

Chris Ford, a 6-3 defensive lineman who runs almost 300 pounds was turning heads before he lost his senior season will be signing on with the University of Buffalo today.

One chop block later, Ford’s left ACL was torn.

“I’ve never been injured, so at first I didn’t know what it was,” the articulate Ford said. “Then it came to me: I got cheap-shotted. I freaked out at first because I never experienced that kind of pain. “It stinks. It still does every day when I’m out there watching my teammates.”

It would have been easy for Buffalo to rescind its full-ride offer. Thanks to a very strong endorsement from former Bees teammate Mason Schreck — a freshman tight end with the Bulls — it was upheld. Ford, who verbally committed at an official visit, couldn’t have been happier.

Bull Run will be running a series on some of the players who are expected to sight a letter of intent to come play football at Buffalo.

Vitals

Position: Safety / Running Back / Quarterback

High School: Christ The King Regional, Middle Village New York

Height: 6'3"

Weight: 190

Origin Story

Christ the King is more known for its basketball programs than for it's football prowess so it's no wonder that osme recruiting sites were lacking a James Coleman football profile to match his basketball profile. The scouts, however, liked what they saw. Michigan, West Virginia, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple and UConn all took a run at Coleman, most of them trying gauge the six foot three inch Senior's interest in playing safety at the next level.

Buffalo coach Matt Simon thinks he sees the future of UB's backfield in Coleman and quickly offered him a scholarship at his preferred position. Buffalo offered Coleman everything he wanted, the opportunity to play right way, get a good education and coaching staff he felt comfortable with.

"I felt like Buffalo committed to me first. I can succeed there, do big things. They weren’t scared to come after me." - James Coleman

Coleman was needed at Quarterback soon after 2012 started, and managed to play that position about as well as he had been playing running back.

2013 Prospectus

Coleman who was named to the All-Diocesan Football Team as a running back during his Junior year was named to the "All Queens" football team by the New York Post this season. The post noted:

The talented and hard-to-tackle junior took over at quarterback a few games into the year and the Royals played their best football of the season. He was third in the CHSFL in total offense with 2,108 yards to go along with 20 total touchdowns, helping to make the players around him better. -- New York Post

He was also given honorable mention by the Time Ledger in their All Queens team.

Where does Coleman fit?

If there is one think 2012 showed Buffalo fans it's that no amount of depth can keep a good player off the field. It may have taken a swarm of injuries but just this past season true freshman Devin Campbell carried a significant amount of the work. Coach Quinn seems far more comfortable playing with the running backs than he does other positions in his spread offense.

That being said 2013 is not a good looking year for an incoming freshman. Branden Oliver (sr), James Potts (jr), and Campbell (so) will all be fighting for carries. There are also several other backs in the mix.

Bull Run will be running a series on some of the players who are expected to sight a letter of intent to come play football at Buffalo.

Vitals

Position: Linebacker

High School: De Paul Catholic, Wayne N.J.

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 220

Origin Story

Greg Lis is a prototypical inside linebacker from De Paul Catholic High School in Wayne New Jersey. He's one of the first guys to hit the weight room and often the last one to leave. That kind of work out regime has helped Lis pack 220 pounds on his six foot one incr frame. He's already physically as big as some of UB's graduating seniors, and with some of the age in the unit he could be called on early in his career.

He followed up a Junior year which saw 111 tackles with a senior season that saw hum tally 82 tackles, 54 solo tackles, ten tackles for loss and three sacks. The athletic linebacker also managed six pass deflections and an interception. On the offensive side of the Ball Lis was used as a lineman.

Lis chose Buffalo over Colgate, Massachusetts and Tulane. Central Florida, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rutgers and Syracuse also showed interest, but no scholarships were offered from those schools.

Lis has managed to become the Quarterback of his defense, and is trusted by his coaching staff to make needed adjustments on the fly.

"He’s our leader out there, too. He’s in charge of the huddle, makes the adjustments. Hes extremely smart, extremely quick on his reads, so he’s able to get to the ball-carrier." -- DePaul coach John McKenna

2013 Prospectus

Lis was named to the Passaic County first team defense and the the all state "non public" first team defense.

Where does Lis fit?

Lis is walking into one of the units with the biggest potential for a 2014 shakeup. But before UB gets to the post Khalil Mack era they have to worry about next season. UB is only losing one starter but they are losing a good deal of their senior depth. No less than three linebackers on UB's 2012 two deep are gone, Mack will be gone after this season, and the year after the other three remaining players are set to graduate.
