Well that was a fun week, thanks to Buffalo’s defensive scoring nobody really came close enough to UB’s score to nail down and “score points”, though lets through an honorable mention at CTBullsFan for calling a score in the 40’s.

So we had a five way tie for first this week, here are the people who scores “2” and their comments from last weeks pick.

Going to have to go with MajorTom here as our week one winner.

With the “spread” of scores in week one BRuWPeG is really up for grabs.

This was the first fair and honest test to determine where in the division hierarchy Buffalo is sitting at this season. And the Bulls, particularly on offense, came up short.

Mid way through the second quarter the Bulls were sitting on a 14-3 lead, but that was a deceptive score based on one quick strike drive and a long Patterson run.

Miami’s defensive scheme prevented UB from sustaining a drive the entire day and it created a field position imbalance that even solid defensive play couldn’t overcome.

The Bulls were able to move the ball, but unlike last week against Temple the Bulls couldn’t string together long time consuming drives that would wear down a defense.

They front loaded the defense and ran solid run blitzing to keep UB at third and longs and then they dialed up the pressure and completely overwhelmed the UB line, punishing Matt Myres they entire day.

The result was a terrible day for Buffalo’s freshman quarterback who was eventually pulled after going 4 four 16 and putting up two interceptions, one of which was a pick six.

Buffalo out gained Miami by almost 100 yards but UB’s short drives, turnovers, and bad coverage on special teams put Miami on a short field most of the day.

Miami’s scores came on drives of 14, 46, 0, 39, and 67 yards.

Buffalo’s had to move much further. 61, 88, and 75.

UB is now 2-3 on the season and have a date against Ohio, the preseason favorite to win the Conference, next week.

What to do when you can’t find a blog? Well I thought maybe the oldest university newspaper west of the Alleghenies might give some insight into the game. Enter The Miami Student.

Chris Vinel is a sports editor at the paper and he was kind enough to take some time to answer some of the questions I had about Miami.

1. Ohio State didn’t just beat you up on the scoreboard, but More than half of Miami’s starters did not participate in a Sunday night walk-through after being injured on some level against the Buckeyes. Has there been any word on Brett Gabbert or the other key injuries?

It’s not looking good for Miami. On Monday, head coach Chuck Martin called his team’s injury situation “horrendous.” The injury report reads like a who’s who of RedHawks football. Brett Gabbert, Jaylon Bester, Manny Rugamba, Pete Nank, Tommy Doyle and Matt Skibinski are all questionable or doubtful this weekend. The last five names on that list are doubtful. Gabbert’s status remains murky. He’ll be a game-time decision.

2. Chuck Martin is in his 6th season at Miami and his teams have a history of starting slow and ramping up as the year rolls on. This year Miami had a brutal out of conference slate, so 1-3 is understandable, but is he running out of time in Miami to put together a whole season?

Martin’s seat is getting warmer. In the eyes of Miami’s fans, it’s scalding, but that’s been the case each of the last three Septembers. His teams are 3-21 in non-conference play the last six seasons, and they have never beaten the rival Cincinnati Bearcats. The three wins have come against Presbyterian in 2015, Austin Peay in 2017 and Tennessee Tech. The first month has never been kind to Martin.

Luckily, as you mentioned, his RedHawks have rebounded in the Mid-American Conference. They’ve posted a combined 16-8 record against conference foes since the start of 2016. A 6-2 MAC record probably saved Martin’s job last season after Miami lost all four of its non-conference contests.

He is running out of time, but I don’t think this is the year his proverbial timer hits zero. His contract runs through the end of the 2020 season. If the RedHawks post another above-.500 record in conference play and make a run at the MAC title this season, Martin will stay for 2020. They’re positioned to do so in a down year for the MAC. If not, he’s going to have some tough postseason conversations with athletic director David Sayler.

3. Miami has four backs averaging more than four carries per game. Is this by design or is the team just trying to settle on a feature back, if it’s the later does anyone to you seem to be the guy who can carry your ground game.

Well, right now, it’s slightly by design and slightly due to injuries. Jaylon Bester was the feature back coming into the season. Martin has publicly called him his best tailback. But Bester hasn’t played since Week One, so Tyre Shelton, Davion Johnson and Maurice Thomas have all stepped up in his absence. They were all going to be factors in the offense regardless, but they’ve assumed larger roles since Bester went down. On Saturday, the Bulls will see mostly Shelton and Johnson in the backfield, with just a little bit of Thomas as an occasional change-of-pace back. Thomas will also line up in the slot and return kicks.

4. Buffalo’s passing game has at times looked sufficient but never overpowering. UB has shown it’s going to need the running game to be effective this season. It’s hard to get a good gauge on Miami’s defense given the level of opposition they have played, so how do you think Miami’s run defense will stand up to a MAC level attack?

That’s the golden question. No one knows what this year’s Miami team actually looks like because it hasn’t played anyone with a similar talent level. Iowa, Cincinnati and Ohio State were far more talented, while the RedHawks outclassed Tennessee Tech. Saturday will be Miami’s best gauge of its own talent yet. Last week against the Buckeyes, the RedHawks played their best quarter of the year in the game’s opening period. They held Ohio State to 4.2 yards per carry. In the MAC, they’ll be looking to do better, but keep the competition difference in mind. The front seven was supposed to be one of Miami’s strengths coming into the season. Led by veterans like Doug Costin, Myles Reid and Dean Lemon, I expect that to hold true during Mid-American Conference play. The unit held opponents to four yards a carry last season. That’s doable again this year. For comparison, the Bulls allowed 4.2 yards a tote to opposing rushers in 2018.

5. Predictions for the game?

Both teams are mysteries. Miami’s non-conference schedule was one of the ten hardest in the nation. Buffalo lost to Liberty but upset Temple. This could go either way, and we’ll learn a lot about each respective team.

The first half will be more of a slugfest, resulting in a lead somewhere around 14-10 for Buffalo at intermission. Both teams will open things up in the second, but if Miami is without Brett Gabbert, it doesn’t have the firepower to keep up. Even with the true freshman quarterback, this will be a tough win to pull out.

Score prediction: The Bulls win 35-24.

Starting the MAC meat of the schedule.

The Buffalo Bulls are sitting at 2-2. I believe that many of us had this team being 3 - 1 and thought hopefully 4 - 1 after Miami of Ohio. The loss to Army still stings and I had zero hope against Baylor. I have to say that I am scared for the rest of the season. Yes the MAC is having another down year but so is Buffalo's defense. It was pointed out to me that Miami is playing a spread option with a mobile QB who can throw. How has Buffalo fared against that type of QB in the past and especially Army. This is going to be a very interesting season. The offense looks good with waves of players stepping up to compliment an experience QB, solid line, and three headed attack at running back. Players like Ron WIlloughby, Jacob Martinez showing flashes, Malcom Robinson, and etc. Not sure why a certain TE has to drop a pass every week and McGill. Many calling for others to get the bulk of the carries but Taylor had a solid game against NSU with 28 carries for 116 yards and is starting to be patient and wait for holes. Hughes who was passed over the first couple of weeks had a great game. Again this goes back to Licata finding the match-up weakness and exploiting it. I also like what I am seeing behind Licata.

Now the defense is a hot mess. The vaulted line is struggling. With no real pressure coming in the second wave it is easy to scheme against the big boys. The secondary has taken a step back from last year and I did not think that was possible. Special teams have been solid especially with punting until this week. An extra point should be automatic. That being said it was a chore for the Bulls. The linebackers are getting lost and I can't stand the play calling and defensive formations. I have no idea how good or mediocre this team is. With 8 MAC games to be played, I can see 4 - 4 very easily. Prove me wrong Bulls but I am not holding my breathe.

Hey we go BRuWPEGers. This is why the game was invented. Seeing your collective thoughts and picks against teams close in talent and especially teams in the MAC. I am going to assume that Buffalo gets the majority or all the picks. I see this as a very close game. (Watch out here comes a blatant plug) As always you can see myself and the boys from Bull Run on Last Bull In Wednesday nights make our picks live. I know you are sitting on pins and needles waiting for our picks. Just get your picks in!

I have decided to add a song to recap where the team is every week. Last week was Easy Lover. I was not particularly saying that Norfolk was easy to love but you get the point. This week the players are feeling on top of the world. Chest's puffed out a little more and confident for this weekend. My song is.....

The 99th season of UB Football began September 1st in Athens, Georgia and ended Friday in Columbus, Ohio. 99 for 99 will run until the MAC Championship game on November 30th. During the Season, the 99 for 99 Instant Classic will immortalize the best moment from the previous game, and let you, the reader decide the best moment of the season.

November 3, 2012 - Buffalo 27, Miami 24 - Playing for an injured Alex Zordich, Joe Licata starts his first game and gives Buffalo their first FBS win on the year.

Joe Licata was given the ball for his first start and it wasn't pretty. Joe started 3-8, all 3 completions to Branden Oliver, gaining only 10 yards and he tossed 1 interception. Fortunately, Buffalo has become accustomed to playing in low scoring scrums and the teams went into the half tied at 3. No one expected the second half to be a shootout.

In the second half, Licata was 2-2 on UB's first drive which lead to a Branden Oliver touchdown run. Miami came right back down the field and tied the game. On the next drive, Licata only needed one pass, a 43-yard touchdown strike to Alex Neutz. Licata started the half 5-6 for 71 yards and a touchdown, but then he went cold missing on his next 4 passes. A FG try turned into a freak play where Tony Daniel threw a brilliant pass to Alex Dennision for a first down. On 1st and 20, from the 21, Licata hit Lee for a touchdown, putting the Bulls up 24-17 with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

Miami was able to score and from there an amazing kick return by Devin Campbell and an equally amazing game-winning field goal by Patrick Clarke gave Bufffalo the dramatic 27-24 win. It wasn't always pretty, but the team definitely seemed to move better with Licata under center. Will he ever relinquish the job back to Zordich?
