UB Tops Charlotte 31-9

The Buffalo Bulls and the Charlotte 49ers met in the Bahamas on Friday afternoon, each looking for their first bowl victory in school history. UB came ready to play in this one, and controlled the game pretty much from the get-go. Both the offense and the defense had strong showings against the Conference USA representative 49ers, and the Bulls avoided second half mistakes that had plagued them at times throughout the season. The end result was 31-9 victory for UB, and the first bowl victory in program history.

First Half

The Bulls won the opening coin flip, and elected to defer, giving the 49ers the first shot with the ball. Following a touchback, Charlotte started at their own 25 yardline and managed to pick up 9 yards on their first two plays. A holding penalty on 3rd and 1 pushed the 49ers back, and they were unable to overcome the setback, going three and out on their first drive.

A 39 yard punt and four yard return by WR Antonio Nunn set the Bulls up at their own 39 for their first possession. As Bulls fans have grown accustom to seeing, RB Jaret Patterson carried much of the load on the drive gaining 46 yards on five carries which helped set-up the Bulls on the Charlotte 12 yard line. From there, QB Kyle Vantrease and Nunn did the rest, connecting on 12 yard TD pass on a fade to the right corner of the endzone.

After regaining control of the ball at their own 25, Charlotte found success on their first play with QB Chris Reynolds connecting with WR Cameron Dollar for a 29 yard completion. From there the 49ers managed to pick up two more first downs, advancing to the UB 16 before being faced with a 4th and 6. Charlotte head coach Will Healy elected to attempt a field goal, but K Jonathan Cruz missed it wide left on the 33 yard attempt into a strong Bahamian wind.

Taking over after the missed field goal, the Buffalo offense only managed to pick-up one first down. K/P Jackson Baltar had a 39 yard punt, but much of it was negated by a 22 yard return by Charlotte DB Nafees Lyon.

Following the punt return, the 49ers took over at the UB 48 yardline. Like the Bulls on the previous drive, the 49ers only managed to pick-up one first down. Learning from the field goal attempt on their previous possession, Will Healy decided to go for a 4th and 1 conversion from the UB 26, however it was stuffed for no gain, turning the ball over on downs back to the Bulls.

The following UB possession was a perfect depiction of many UB drives this season. The Bulls ate 8:26 off the clock and featured an effective mix of Jaret Patterson, Kevin Marks, and Kyle Vantrease on the ground, while Vantrease also completed passes to Zac Lefebvre, and Antonio Nunn. This drive took the Bulls from their own 26 down to the Charlotte 1, and on 4th and 1, a Kyle Vantrease QB sneak resulted in the Bulls second TD of the game. K Alex McNulty’s PAT made it a 14-0 game with 3:33 remaining in the half.

On the first play of Charlotte’s drive following the TD, a tipped pass was intercepted by LB James Patterson and returned to the Charlotte 12.

The Bulls were unable to get anything going after the interception, actually being moved back two yards to the Charlotte 14. K Alex McNulty came on and nailed the 31 yard field goal attempt to make it a 17-0 game with 1:25 remaining in the half.

After regaining possession, Charlotte picked up two first downs, one on a roughing the passer penalty on UB DE Malcolm Koonce. Koonce bounced back, on the very next play by sacking Chris Reynolds and forcing a fumble that was recovered by DE Ledarius Mack and returned to the Charlotte 44.

With just six seconds remaining on the clock, head coach Lance Leipold opted to take a shot at the end zone on a Hail Mary into the wind. The pass was intercepted by Charlotte S Marquavis Gibbs who was safely wrestled to the ground after time had expired. The Bulls took a 17-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Second Half

After deferring in the first half Buffalo got the first possession of the second half. The Bulls managed to pick up one first down before being forced to punt. A net 38 yard punt by Jackson Baltar gave Charlotte the ball at their own 24.

Charlotte didn’t fare any better than the Bulls, managing just one first down themselves on their first possession of the second half. Facing 4th and 4 at their own 43 and down 3 scores, the 49ers opted to go for it, but an incompletion turned the ball over on downs.

Buffalo capitalized on the prime starting field position. 4 Jaret Patterson carries, a Vantrease-Lefebvre connection, and an offsides penalty on Charlotte moved the Bulls down to the six yardline. Patterson took it from there, and plunged into the endzone. Following the PAT, the Bulls held a 24-0 lead.

On Charlotte’s following drive they finally found an answer. After starting at their own 25, the 49ers worked their way out to the 49. From there Chris Reynolds connected with top receiver Victor Tucker for a 51 yard catch and run that Tucker took to the house. A failed 2 point conversion attempt left the score at 24-6.

The Bulls were not able to get anything going on the following drive and went 3 and out. Jackson Baltar’s 42 yard punt was downed at the Charlotte 31.

Charlotte continued to show more life offensively, leading another good drive. A balanced run/pass attack moved the 49ers down to the UB 15 where the drive stalled out. The big play on the drive was a 25 yard completion from Reynolds to former UB player, and Buffalo native WR Tyler Ringwood. On 4th and 5 from the 15, Charlotte took the points, and kicked a 32 yard field goal which Jonathan Cruz converted to make the score 24-9.

The Buffalo offense bounced back well from the 3 and out on their previous possession. Nine consecutive rushes by Jaret Patterson moved the Bulls from their own 25 to the Charlotte 25. Then three carries by both Jaret Patterson and Kevin Marks moved Buffalo to the Charlotte 10. Jaret Patterson then did what Jaret Patterson does: score TDs. Patterson put the game on ice with a rushing TD from 10 yards out, and the ensuing Alex McNulty PAT left the game at its final score: 31-9. The drive melted 9:07 off the clock, and left the game clock with just 1:43 remaining.

Charlotte managed to move the ball to the UB 35 with a series of completions with the Bulls in prevent defense. With 0:03 remaining, Reynolds dropped back for one last pass, but was sacked by Ledarius Mack.

This victory provided the Buffalo Bulls with a program first bowl win. This also perfectly capped a good season for Lance Leipold and the Bulls. Given all that was lost after last year this was a very successful season, and the team improved as the season wore on. With 16 of 22 starters returning next season, 2020 will be fun and the Bulls will be back in the MAC title mix, if not favorites.

Behind a solid day on the ground from Sophomore Jaret Patterson the Buffalo Bulls defeated the Charlotte 49ers to win the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl. It was the programs first ever victory in a Bowl Game.

After stopping Charlotte on the games opening drive the Bulls took the ball down field and scored on a beautiful fade pass from Kyle Vantrease to Antonio Nunn. After that drive the Bulls would never trail.

Buffalo had built up a 14-0 lead late in the first half when a late interception by James Patterson put the UB in field goal range. Alex McNulty nailed a 31 yard field goal to send the game into the half with the Bulls up 17-0.

After trading fruitless drives in the Second half UB got the ball on the 45 yard line and drove down to the red zone, where Patterson drove in the ball; from six yards out.

The Charlotte offense would wake up. Chris Reynolds hit Victor Tucker in the middle of the defense. Tucker made a man miss around the 30, and took the ball in for the 49ers first points.

The 9ers would tuck on a field goal on their next drive to close to within 24-9, but that’s as close as they would get. On UB’s next drive, Buffalo faced a 3rd and 18 when Kyle Vantrease executed a perfect delay draw play to Jaret Patterson who ran for 19 yards.

That play proved a back breaker.

UB would finish the drive off with a 7 yard run from Paterson into the endzone.

Patterson finished with 173 yards on the ground, a school record for Bowl Games, and he was names the MVP.

Rather than our normal record watch format, where we focus on one particular player who may move up in the school record books, Bull Run is going to do a post putting together only the records from the three previous Bowl games that the school has played in.

For the first time in school history two Bowls are being played in a close enough time frame so that UB players will have played in Multiple Bowls. The previous games were in 2008, 2013, and 2018.

Thus a few “Bull Bowl” career records are bound to fall.

Passing:

It very doubtful, given how UB runs their offense, that Kyle Vantrease puts up gaudy numbers. But in terms of quarterback efficency four out of his last five games were better than any UB signal caller has done in a Bowl game.

Overview:

Friday in the Bahamas when the Buffalo Bulls (7-5) take on the Charlotte 49ers (7-5) will be a match-up between two teams that have gotten things rolling at the right time. The Bulls come into the bowl game winning five of their last six, while the 49ers have won five straight. Much like the Bulls, the 49ers lost to a pair of teams that finished ahead of them in conference (FAU and WKU), but Charlotte pretty much took care of business against the middle and bottom tiers of the conference. The 49ers best win of the season came against Marshall, who finished the regular season 8-4.

The 49ers are playing in their first bowl game in school history after just beginning to field a football team in 2013, and making the jump to FBS in 2015.

Offense:

The offense is the calling card of this Charlotte team, and they rank 25th in the nation on a yards per play basis (6.4). That mark is the second best that the Bulls have faced this year behind only Liberty at 6.6 yards per play. The Bulls have been playing significantly better since the Liberty match-up but they will have to do better than the 7.3 yards per play that they ceded to the Flames in the early season 35-17 loss.

QB Chris Reynolds is the do-it-all man for the 49ers, throwing for 2366 yards on the season to go with 757 yards on the ground. Reynolds has thrown for 21 TDs, and rushed for 9 TDs while throwing 10 interceptions to date. The 49ers have 14 players that have caught a pass so far this season (including Reynolds), but they have two primary receiving threats in Victor Tucker, and Cameron Dollar. Tucker has 848 yards on 49 catches and 6 TDs, while Dollar has posted 37/551/2 on the season. Another threat in the receiving game is third leading receiver Tyler Ringwood (20/331/5), who is from Buffalo, and attended Bishop Timon. Last but not least is perhaps the 49ers best offensive weapon, star RB Benny Lemay. Lemay has 19 catches for 242 yards and 4 TDs in just 10 games this season to go with 1027 yards and 9 TDs on the ground.

Defense:

The Charlotte defense has been the weak point of this team in 2019, ranking 105th in the country, allowing 6.2 yards per play, and they’ve been even worse against the run, ranking 110th at 5.0 yards per carry. While the 49ers struggle defensively, they don’t lack individual star power. DE Alex Highsmith was named a third team All-American this week and is #2 in NCAA in tackles for a loss (21.5) and sacks (15). Highsmith isn’t the only threat to QB Kyle Vantrease, DE Markees Watts also has 9.5 sacks on the season. The pair of defensive ends have forced a combined 5 fumbles on the season. Other defensive standouts include S Marquavis Gibbs, who leads the team in tackles (94), and DB Marquill Osborne who leads the team in interceptions (3), and passes defended (7).

Closing Thoughts:

Somebody will be leaving this game with their first bowl win in program history, and Bulls fans hope that the 4th time is the charm. The 49er offense is well rounded, and while the defense has struggled they have the individual playmakers that can win you a game. As 6.5 point favorites, the Bulls should be able to win this one if they can play their brand of football characterized by tough defense, pounding the ball on the ground, and limiting turnovers.

Before Buffalo takes on Charlotte next week I thought I would reach out to Underdog Dynasty, While a few G5 schools are fortunate enough to have their own devoted SBNation site, and many others call under the umbrella of a conference blog, most are covered by UDD.

Underdog covers most of the independents, CUSA, The Belt, and the American. ANd they do an amazing job of it.

They have a devoted “Charlotte guy” in the person of Hunter Bailey. Hunter was kind enough to field some questions from me.

————————————-

Q1 - Looking at your team the x-factor which jumps out at me is Chris Reynolds, he’s efficient and productive through the air and quite a weapon on the ground. Heck, he’s even looked good as a receiver at times (Thinking the FAU game). What, if any, chinks are there in his armor?

A: The biggest knocks on Reynolds coming into this season was the ability to put the deep ball where it needs to be and his height at 5’10. With a shorter quarterback, dealing with batted passes at the line of scrimmage is typical, but in Reynolds’ case, he has combatted that with plenty of throws out of the pocket and even the occasional side-arm pass. It’s tough to highlight the chinks in his armor as he can hit both the short and deep throws, is a threat to rush for 100 at any time, and is the heart and soul of the offense. Reynolds has thrown 10 interceptions on the season, with 8 of those coming across the 50, and has committed five turnovers in the last three games. Ball security will be key as Buffalo is tied for 18th in the nation with a +13 turnover margin.

Q2 - Speaking of the passing game I notice none of your receivers are getting a big lions share of the work. Obviously, Tucker is the big deep threat, but outside of that is there another who stands out as more key to your offense than the rest?

A: Victor Tucker is absolutely the deep threat, but he also has a knack for finding the soft spot in the coverage. The 49ers have had 4 receivers cross the 100-yard mark in a single game this season, but the main three who see the most targets are Tucker, Cameron Dollar, and Tyler Ringwood. Any of the three can pop off at any time, and I think that’s what makes the offense tough to stop. There isn’t a bonified second option, in my opinion, it really just depends on Reynolds’ progressions on the play. If you elect to not double Tucker, he can draw penalties and beat his man one-on-one, but if you do double, that leaves the door open for Dollar, Ringwood, and even LeMay to make plays in the passing game.

Q3 - Finally onto the running game, how would you describe the type of Runner UB will see in Benny LeMay

A: Benny LeMay battled an Achilles injury and missed two games late in the season but has looked back to good health after rattling off two straight 100-yard performance to close the regular season. Buffalo will see a back with the power to run through you, and the speed to run around you. Benny is explosive at the point of contact and is a workhorse for extra yardage. He has made his mark this season with the emerging ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, and before missing time had caught touchdowns in three consecutive games, totaling four on the season.

Q4 - Defensively you’re going to see UB try to run the ball all day long, how have you fared against solid run-first teams this season?

A: The 49ers started the 2019 season with a red-hot offense, but the main problem was that the defense couldn’t get off the field. Appalachian State tailback Darrynton Evans headlined Charlotte’s defensive woes rushing for 234 and three scores, and the thunder-and-lightning combo of Napoleon Maxwell and Anthony Jones combined for 231 and four scores when FIU throttled Charlotte in the midst of their four-game skid. Will Healy’s first season did a complete 180 when the defense hit their stride, and the 49ers held Brendan Knox, C-USA’s leading rusher, to under 100 yards in their senior day victory. Buffalo presents a challenge with two backs over 1,000 yards on the season, both of which have more than 200 carries on the season and average more than 4.7 yards per carry. Even the QB Vantrease has 5 touchdowns in 7 games played. The 49ers front 7 must do their jobs or this one could be a track meet.

Q5 - Prediction?

A: Buffalo’s offense is going to put their head down and try to run straight through the 49ers defense. The Bulls haven’t played in a shoot-out this season, and I think the matchup with Charlotte is going to be just that. Buffalo is +13 in the turnover margin with Charlotte being -3. This battle will no doubt be won by whoever can take care of the ball and win the time of possesion battle. The 49ers will need a solid performance from their O-line to get Benny LeMay and Chris Reynolds rolling, and with that, I’ve got the 49ers in a close one. Charlotte 31, Buffalo 30.
