UB scored their first win against a major program when they dominated Rutgers in Piscataway. In his first career start, Aaron Leeper ran for 153 yards on 34 carries and a TD that gave UB a 7-3 lead. From there, Andre Forde put on a show with 5 catches for 75 yards and 3 receiving TDs.
The UB defense held Rutgers to 221 yards of offense and scored 2 points on a safety. JJ Gibson, Mark Graham and Gemara Williams each had an interception while Anthony Adriano, Kevin Wiggins and Dahnel Singfield recorded sacks.
The 2002 win was UB's only win against a Big East opponent in UB's FBS era until the 2013 victory over UConn.
